Without Dairy Service
Matters in the dairy business have been somewhat complicated for several days past and patrons who have set out empties in the hope of securing filled bottles have been disappointed, and as to how long such a state of affairs will exist cannot be told.
Mr. Jones, who took over the dairy business from Mr. Linch, is disposing of his milk to the ice cream factory and states that he instructed his driver last week to notify patrons that bottle delivery would be discontinued.
FOUND ILLICIT STILL
In an out-of-the way pass on Mill creek, four miles southwest of Eufaula, last Thursday Sheriff McCune and two deputies surprised and captured John Thompson and Jim Cantrell, alleged manufacturers of moonshine whiskey.
In the cabin the officers found two men working. Four barrels of “mash” were in evidence out of which the whiskey was to have been made.

FARMERS WERE DUPED IN SALE OF MEXICAN LAND
55 McIntosh County Citizens Reached Laredo Before Deception discovered For several months a man by the name of Johnson has been in Checotah organizing a “colony” of our farmers to go to Old Mexico.
Last Sunday at noon the delegation of 55 men, women and children left for the town of “Edenville,” the picture of their dreams.
We will let the Associated Press tell the remainder of the story in the following dispatch from San Antonio, Texas: Fifty-five men, women and children, who sold their homes near Checotah to purchase land in Mexico, only to find that they had been defrauded, disbanded in San Antonio tonight.
They came here from Laredo, where they discovered they possessed no land which they believed they had purchased.
The party intended to colonize land in the southern part of the state of Vera Cruz for which they paid $2 an acre. Several carloads of mules, cows, hogs and chickens were taken with the colonists. Their stock cars were stopped in San Antonio.

Road Construction Program Continuing at a Rapid Pace
Highway 73 to be Completed by Early Spring With huge elevating graders biting deep gaps into the earth along the proposed new route of highway 73 between Checotah and Eufaula, rapid progress is being made on the designated roadway, and should be completed in early May, according to Jim Conley, contractor on the job.
INFLATIONARY STEP IS TAKEN BY ROOSEVELT Dollar Devalued 59.06 Percent
Washington, Jan. 31 – President Roosevelt Wednesday devalued the dollar and gave the world a standing offer to buy and sell gold, according to the needs of international trade, at a fixed price in dollars. This action was interpreted by treasury officials as putting the country “on a modified gold standard.”
The president fixed the value of the dollar at 59.06 percent of its former gold equivalent, and on this basis a price of $35 an ounce was established for international dealings.
Roosevelt Ball Held at Eufaula
McIntosh county did its share in honoring the birthday of President Roosevelt Tuesday night, when funds were raised at a benefit dance and bridge party staged at the armory in Eufaula for the Warm Springs Foundation, established by the president.

Billy Azlin’s Plane Shot Down in Europe Billy Azlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M Azlin of the Checotah community, was shot down in a bomber raid over Yugoslavia June 16, his parents have been advised.
Azlin, a ball turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator, is now a German war prisoner.
He played on the Checotah football team in 1941 and 1942. His parents live 5 ½ miles east of Checotah.
USO Girls to Hold Big Benefit Dance
The local USO girls will give a benefit dance in the USO room here at 8 p.m. Saturday. The dance will last until midnight.
Prices of admission are 25 cents each or 50 cents per couple.
Alvin Avant Dies On India Frontier
Alvin Avant, former star basketball player of Checotah High School, died in India, August 14, where he was serving as a mechanic in the air corps, his parents were advised by the war department Tuesday.
Alvin graduated from Checotah High School in 1938.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Avant, reside eight miles northeast of Checotah on the county line.
ARMY TO HELP IN PAPER DRIVE IN CITY SUNDAY Checotah is Asked to Produce 15 Tons in Campaign Four army trucks from Camp Gruber will roll into Checotah at 10 a.m. Sunday for the purpose of picking up wastepaper, according to A.B. Childress, high school principal. Local Boy Scouts have already done a lot to make the drive a success, but Checotah housewives can help to make it an even better success, Childress said.

New Grain Elevator Up For Discussion
The Checotah chapter of the Farmers Union will meet Thursday night at the Union Tabernacle for the regular monthly meeting.
Discussions will be continued on plans for construction of a grain elevator here by the state farmers union organization.
Turner Is Hopeful on Turnpike Loan
Gov. Turner said Tuesday he believes the Reconstruction Finance Corp. and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority are near agreement on a $33 million loan to build the proposed Oklahoma City-Tulsa toll road.

White Stag Wins Plaque For Best Quality Garments
On Jan. 20, 1975, Rog Knutson, vice president of the White Stag Manufacturing Co., presented a plaque to White Stag’s Checotah Plant for producing the best quality garments of the seven plants in the company. This award is to be given annually.

Whether it’s John Deere green or international red, tractors will exhibit their pulling power when the Checotah Round Up Club hosts a Green Country Tractor Club Antique Tractor Pull starting at noon on June 24.

Checotah man named to NSU Hall of Fame Ina Bittle of Checotah and her siblings believe it’s quite a privilege for their brother, the late Jim Allen Bittle, to be honored this weekend. He’s a 2015 Northeastern State University Athletics Hall of Fame inductee.
The class will be enshrined at the annual Hall of Fame Banquet at 11a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the NSU Even Center in Tahlequah.
Bittle was an All-Oklahoma Intercollegiate Conference performer as a member of the basketball team from 1946-51. He was also one of the top baseball players for NSU.
Bittle served in the United States military during World War II and was discharged in1947. He graduated in 1951 with a degree in mathematics.
He served 34 years as an athletics coach and education administrator in the public school system in Oklahoma.
Bittle died in 2008.
