Gridiron greats immortalized: Sharpe, Allen, Gates, Allen enter Hall of Fame
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

Four football legends— Sterling Sharpe, Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Antonio Gates— took their rightful place in Canton as the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was officially enshrined during a star-studded ceremony at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The night also featured a dominant 34–7 preseason win by the Chargers over the Lions, but the real celebration was for the new immortals of the game.

Sterling Sharpe, a Green Bay Packers standout, finally heard the call after years of waiting. In just seven seasons, he racked up 595 receptions for 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns, earning five Pro Bowl selections and three First-Team All-Pro nods. A devastating neck injury cut his brilliant career short, but his long-overdue induction completes the Sharpe family legacy— joining his brother, Shannon Sharpe, who entered the Hall in 2011.

Jared Allen, the fearsome pass rusher with a cowboy flair, brought the heat for 12 seasons with the Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, and Panthers. With 136 career sacks, five Pro Bowl appearances, and four All-Pro honors, Allen’s relentless energy and signature calf-roping celebration made him a fan favorite. He capped his career in Super Bowl 50 with the Panthers.

Eric Allen, a ballhawking cornerback, earned six Pro Bowl trips and totaled 54 interceptions—eight of them returned for touchdowns—during his time with the Eagles, Saints, and Raiders. Known for his elite coverage skills and leadership, Allen finally joins the Hall as one of the game’s most underrated defenders.

Antonio Gates, perhaps the most remarkable story of all, never played college football—but became one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. Undrafted, unproven, and unstoppable, Gates spent his entire 16year career with the Chargers, compiling 955 catches for 11,841 yards and 116 touchdowns. He made eight Pro Bowls and earned three All-Pro selections. Gates now stands as only the 23rd undrafted player to enter the Hall—proof that heart and hustle can outweigh pedigree.

From unstoppable defenders to dynamic pass-catchers, the Class of 2025 is a tribute to excellence, perseverance, and game-changing talent. Canton just got a whole lot more legendary.
