Checotah Schools savor the holidays
By LADONNA RHODES STAFF WRITER

All of Checotah Schools were a buzz as students, teachers and staff savored their last week of holiday events before Thanksgiving Break.

Checotah School Choirs under Director Greg Spena performed their fall concert “Sounds of the Season” on Thursday, Nov. 20.Those in attendance enjoyed a delightful evening of music and songs by middle school and high school students.

Checotah Middle School wrapped up their annual Canned Food Drive for the Methodist Mission with over 2,000 cans of goods and $1,800 for the mission to buy turkeys, etc. for families in need in the McIntosh County area on Friday. Ms. Cone’s third- hour class won bragging rights for bringing in the most donations.

Friday was a full day of Turkey Olympics for Checotah Intermediate School. Classes competed against each other in several games to include Hula Hoop Pass, Pin the Tail on the Turkey, Aladdin Slide, and Turkey on a Plate, Granny Pants and more. The Cheeto Ball Beard Toss proved to be harder than it looked by throw Cheetos balls onto a shaving cream beard. Of course, the real entertainment came from watching students as they gagged and tried their best to gobble down chocolate covered mystery items – from chocolate covered marshmallows to chocolate covered broccoli that was really hard to swallow for some. As one class from each grade won first place, only one class won the grand championship for the third year in a row Mrs. Duvall’s Class!

Then Saturday the 11th Annual Winter Miss Fundraiser Pageant brought beauty, poise and talent to the stage at the Checotah Performing Art Center with several young ladies competing in the talent show with Ember Hackler walking away with the Grand Supreme.

Students will return to class Tuesday, Dec. 2, just in time to get ready for classes and Christmas events and festivities.

There will also be a concession stand that evening with hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, caramel apples and more.

Wildcat Winter Wonderland will take place Dec. 8 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the CHS school courtyard – enter by the Ag building. There will be Santa pictures, a festive hayride, winter bingo, games, a Christmas movie and crafts. There will also be food trucks and free refreshments of cookies, cocoa and popcorn.

Checotah bands will have their Christmas Concerts on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at the PAC. Starting at 6 p.m. Level 2, Level 3, The Class of Checotah and CHS Jazz Band will all perform several Christmas selections for the community to enjoy. The band will also be selling chances to “Be the Conductor” of the high school band for one song. All proceeds will go back into one local church that each year feeds all the CHS band students on Friday nights before they perform.

Pre-K students will perform their Christmas “T’was the Night before Christmas” at Marshall Elementary on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10 at 9 a.m. in their cafeteria.

Checotah Middle School will be performing two productions of their Holiday Hotline Heroes Play on Dec. 11 at 6 p.m. and Dec. 12 at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
