On Wednesday, January 6, part of Checotah’s history went up in flames as the historical home built by the first pharmacist in Checotah, Herman D. Kniseley, caught fire around 3 p.m. Local firefighters diligently fought the flames at the corner of 2nd and Park but could not save the home. No one was injured during the ordeal. Marguerite Schmitt, 91, passed away on Jan. 6, but her spirit will live on in the brick and mortar of the Eufaula Memorial Library which owes much to her for its existence.

Brad Venable, a prominent video game and anime voice actor who chased his small town Checotah dreams to Los Angeles, California, passed away last week at age 43. Family stated that Venable had a heart attack, just one day after testing positive for COVID-19. The sad news was broken on social media on Jan. 8 with heartfelt tributes pouring in from colleagues and friends.
