J. L. Matthews, Oktaha resident, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2021 at his home in Oktaha at the age of 81. He was born on Saturday, Nov. 18, 1939 to Jay and Lucy Grose Matthews in Checotah, Oklahoma.
J. L. attended Victor School and graduated from Checotah High School in 1958. On Sept. 5, 1959, he married the love of his life, Sharon Doyle in Eufaula, Oklahoma.
He went on to further his education, receiving his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1962. J. L. went to work for the Army Corps of L. went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers, retiring after 33 years. He loved to ranch and take care of his

He is lovingly survived by his wife, Sharon Matthews of the home in Oktaha; his daughters Kari Matthews Vaughn and her husband Mike of Tulsa, Lori Matthews and her husband Mark Greer of Checotah, and Luci Matthews Jamison and her husband Bob of Houston, Texas; his son, Mike Matthews and his wife Annette of Berthoud, Colo.; eight grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
J. L. is also survived by his brothers, Roy Matthews, and his wife Donna of Oktaha, and Jack Matthews of Checotah, his sister-in-law, Pauline Matthews of Tulsa as well as piles of nieces, nephews and a lot of friends.
