L.C. Derrick, longtime Checotah resident, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020 in Muskogee, OK at the age of 90. He was born on Tuesday, March 25, 1930 to Charlie and Roberta Jones Derrick in New Hope, Oklahoma.
L.C. graduated from Oktaha High School in 1947. After school, he went to Arizona and pipelined and worked construction. He later moved back to Oklahoma where he met and married Leola Henderson on Monday, Aug. 18, 1952.
He started working for Koch Brothers Gin. He made his career in blacksmithing and breaking horses.
His love of horses led to two terms as President of the Round-Up club.
His expertise in taking care of sick cows and horses was appreciated, and sought after by licensed veterinarians.
L.C. was a mentor to many of the young men in the community.
He loved to walk, he thought walking cures most things. When dementia progressed to the final stage, he was still walking up and down the halls in the nursing home.
L.C. was preceded in death by his parents and several other relatives.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Leola Derrick; his son, Ernest Peoples of Lubbock, Texas; his daughter, Carmaleta Derrick of Oklahoma City; his son, Jimmy Derrick of Norman; his daughter, Jewell Benson of Checotah; his son, Waco D. of Guymon; his daughter, Claudia Derrick of Checotah; 16 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
L.C. is also survived by his sisters, Elora Lyons, and Pearl Brewer both of Peoria, Ill., Lois Rush of Muskogee; his brothers, George Derrick and his wife Stella and John Derrick and his wife Ruth all of Muskogee, and MacArthur Derrick of Kansas, Kan., as well as numerous nieces, nephews other extended family and a host of friends.
A celebration of L.C. Derrick will be held at a later date.
