Ora Ledbetter

Oct. 14, 1929 - Dec. 22, 2020

Ora Ledbetter went to be with the Lord on Dec. 22, 2020, in Springfield, Missouri at Cox Hospital. She was born on Oct. 14, 1929, to William (Bill) and Inez Hill. She was the fourth of eight children.

Ora attended school at Central High. In 1947, she met and married Omer Ledbetter Jr. In 1948, they had a daughter, Gwendolyn Sue. A short time after that, they moved to Ohio. They stayed there for two years and came back to Oklahoma for a while. Then, Omer (Dune) and Ora and Cora and Ed Chronister set out to move to Fresno, California.

Ora went to work for Sun-Service, a dry cleaners. That is where she learned to take out spots and stains. She was the spot queen.

She then went to work for Vendocators (Vendo) as a spot welder. They made vending machines. She worked her way up to the office and worked there until 1969 when she and Dune moved back to Oklahoma.

She then went to work for Sharpe’s Department Store. Ora loved her job and would say there wasn’t a day she didn’t enjoy going to work. She loved going to market and buying for the store. There was a special place in her heart for Luke and Logan and Sharpe’s.

Ora liked to travel with a group of ladies, traveling to Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, Washington DC and Switzerland to name a few. Switzerland was her favorite because it was so clean and there was no trash anywhere.

Witnessing for the Lord was her favorite thing to do anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

She went to North Carolina to Billy Graham’s retreat. She said it was a wonderful and amazing experience, so peaceful and calm. She and a friend named Wallie went to Mexico on a mission trip. It was a wonderful trip and she would have liked to do more missionary work in her life.

She also started Children’s Church because there was none when she first started at the First Baptist Church.

A special thank you to Lorie Ebert and Sissy Lee for all the love and care that was given to my mother.

She is survived by: her daughter, Gwendolyn Sue Dill of Checotah; her granddaughter, Ashley Brook Kuhn and husband Jeff of California; her sister, Lynda Killingsworth and husband John of Chandler; her brother, William Hill and wife Anna of Bixby; brother-in-law Raymond Ledbetter and wife Charlotte and sister in-law, Wanda Olson and husband Gary, California.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Inez Hill; her husband, Omer Ledbetter Jr.; her sisters, Nellie Davidson and husband Earl, Opal Dempsey and husband RG, Cora Chronister and husband Ed, Eloyese Smith and husband Jerell, and Delores Wadsworth and husband Cline; a son in law, Eric P. Dill; grandson, Derick Omer Washburn; nieces, Glenda Basden, Carrie Waldman and nephews, Cody Hughes, Jon Psaila.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Steve Dennis officiating.

Burial will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Checotah Funeral & Cremation Service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Checotah First Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
