Phi Voss, Jr.
Phi Voss, Jr., lifetime Checotah resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 91. He was born on Monday, June 11, 1928 to PM and Ona (Kincaid) Voss in Morrilton, Arkansas. As a young boy he moved with his family to Checotah, Oklahoma. He attended Victor School until the 8th grade, when he had to quit to help work on the family farm. On October 12, 1948, he married the love of his life, Nadine Cantwell in Van Buren, Arkansas. He joined the United States Marines on April 14, 1952, and was honorably discharged on April 1, 1954. Phi worked at the Eagle-Picher Smelter in Henryetta, Oklahoma for 20 years and at Acme Engineering in shipping and receiving for 10 years. Although he only had an 8th grade education, Phi will be remembered by his family and friends as a very smart and able person who could fix anything. If you couldn’t find it or buy it, he could make it or build it. He loved farming, ranching and was checking and feeding cattle until a few days before his death. He was a Charter Member of Westside Free Will Baptist Church since October 1978 where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Church Treasurer. Phi faithfully served as Deacon for 51 years. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous brothers and sisters. Phi is lovingly survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Nadine; his children, Dr. Mike Voss and his wife Faye, Brenda Hodges and her husband Terry all of Checotah; his grandchildren, Heath Hodges and his wife Jodie of Warner, Kim Voss Emerson and her husband Josh of Checotah, Kyle Hodges of Checotah, Crystal Voss Irwin and her husband Randy of Hartshorne, Kara Voss Thomas and her husband Zack, Jeremy Matthews and Jared Lamb all of Checotah. Also, his great-grandchildren, Alanah, Aithan, Parker, Briar, Levi, Julie and Jax. He is also survived by his brother, Gene Voss and his wife Betty of Shawnee, his sister-in-law, Dorothy Hall and a special niece Donna Ramsey as well as other numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and a lifetime of friends. Services celebrating the life of Phi were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2019 at Westside Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Raymond Coats and Reverend Joel Kircher officiating. Committal prayers and interment followed in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Heath Hodges, Kyle Hodges, Josh Emerson, Randy Irwin, Zach Thomas and Bob Brinsfield served as Casket Bearers. His great-grandchildren served as Honorary Casket Bearers.
