Samuel Todd

June 9, 1941 – Feb. 9, 2020

Samuel Dellis Todd, 78, of Checotah, Oklahoma passed from this life on Feb. 9, 2020. He was born June 9, 1941 in Checotah to his parents, Harlen and Hazel Todd.

He married the love of his life, Cleda Latta July 8, 1963 and they have shared over 57 beautiful years together.

Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher and friend. He will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Sam was preceded in passing by his parents, Harlen and Hazel Todd (Park).

He is survived by his wife Cleda Todd (Latta); children Holly Raines of Verdigris, Okla., Dellise Miller and Husband Billy, Brec Todd and wife Ashley both of Checotah, Okla.; his grandchildren, Erin and Evan Raines, Easton and husband Alex Rogers, Todd Lackey, Lennes Miller, Bailey Todd; two greatgrandchildren; Brothers Claxton Todd and wife Janice, Larry Todd and wife Sherry both of Checotah, Okla.; Sister Theda Stookesberry and husband Gary of Ottumwa, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Sam was born and raised in the Checotah Central High area. He graduated from Checotah High School and continued his education, obtaining an Associate’s in Science from Connors State Agricultural College and a Bachelors of Animal Science from Oklahoma State University.

After graduating, he worked as a ranch foreman in Nebraska for a short time, then returned to OSU and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education and began a fulfilling career teaching and mentoring our Future Farmers of America. He taught vocational agriculture seven years at Calvin, Oklahoma and 23 at Morris, Oklahoma where he retired in 1996.

He took great pride and shared stories often, bragging about his former students’ achievements.

He was a member of the National Vo cational Agricultural Association, Oklahoma Teachers Association, American Angus Association, awarded Teacher of Teachers, achieved a Three Star Gold Chapter Award, as well as many other awards during his career.

He was admired and respected throughout the Community.

Sam was in the Army National Guard from 1963 -1969 and served for the Kansas Sunflowers and Oklahoma Thunderbirds.

He was proud to be an Oklahoman and very proud to serve his country. He always attributed military teaching for preparing successful individuals. Papa was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

After retiring, he and Cleda returned to his homeplace, where for 20 years he enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities, raising beagles and hunting with friends, maintaining the farm and caring for his cattle.

He taught us so many things about hard work, dedication, love and patience. His impact will remain, and his love will be with us always and forever.

Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 at 1 p.m. at First Free Will Baptist Church, Checotah, Okla.

Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Checotah.

Rusty Goad, Mark Kelley, Leonard Simpson, Kevin Johnson, Dean Lackey, Justin Reed, Joe May and Dennis Nunley served as Casket Bearers. Butch Goad, Bill Dillsaver, Don Gibson, Bill Bearden, Jerry Davidson and James Gaxiola served as Honorary Casket Bearers.
