District Champs

Lady Wildcats dominate OKC Douglas for 2019 title

Feb. 2019 - A quick start and unrelenting defense helps Checotah Lady Wildcats’ (8-15) win the 2018-2019 season district championship in a 50-32 win over Oklahoma City Douglas (OKC Douglas). Checotah started the game on fire as Alexis Hamilton, Olivia Clayton and Vanessa Henson help lead the Wildcats to an early 18-8 deficit in the first period. OKC Douglas did not have an answer as to how to guard Clayton and Henson. Clayton scored 24 points and Henson added 10 points.

“I’m very proud of this team and this accomplishment. It really means a lot to these girls. They worked hard for this all season and they deserve it,” Checotah assistant coach Tommy Gage said.

Checotah’s tough defense held OKC Douglas to just eight points in the second period and six points in the third period. Madison Proctor, Hamilton and Gracey Lewis forced numerous turnovers and grabbed several rebounds that were key to the victory.

The Lady Wildcats won the rebounding game as Clayton, Hamilton and Henson grabbed 10 rebounds for a combined 30 rebounds. Hamilton finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and six assists while Clayton added 24 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four blocked shots.

Douglas edges Checotah

OKC Douglas managed to outrebound Checotah (15-9) in the final period to hold onto a 56-48 victory. It was a battle from the start with both teams not able to set the tone early in the first half as Checotah trailed 26-22 at the halftime break. Caden Martin led the Wildcats with 14 points but wasn’t enough as OKC Douglas forced a couple of turnovers late in the game to hang on to the 56-48 victory. Brenden Dan added 10 points, Ethan Parker had eight points and Daylen Warrior finished with nine points.
