SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: COMMON LOON
The common loon and its haunting cries may be icons of the Northwoods, but these diving birds also frequent several Oklahoma lakes. Loons only visit our state during winter months and are more drab now than when in their classic black-andwhite breeding plumage. Even so, these birds can be identified year-round by their stout bills and long bodies that sit low in the water.
