Officers Get Busy

State Officers, assisted by the local officials, made a wholesale raid on the drink emporiums of McIntosh county Monday and Tuesday of this week and as a result there is now little doing in the drink line.

The raids occurred at Checotah and Eufaula simultaneously Monday afternoon and by night the larger portion of the goods and fixtures in both towns were in the hands of officers.

DELIGHTFUL OCCASION

Tuckabatchee hall was the scene of a most delightful society event Wednesday night which was a dance given by a number of the leading ladies of the city.

The hall was handsomely and artistically decorated for the event while a Muskogee orchestra furnished the music, which was declared by the jolly dancers, to be the best ever had in Checotah

Congressman Creager Here

Congressman Charles E. Creager came down from Muskogee Wednesday noon and spent the afternoon in town conferring with the citizens in regard to a successor to Postmaster Asbell, who expects to soon resign from the place.

408 BRIDS ENTERED IN SECOND ANNUAL POULTRY SHOW THE “Mortgage Raisers” attracted the attention and admiration of hundreds of McIntosh County citizens at the old Futterman store building on Gentry avenue this week. The above title belongs to the chicken and during yesterday and today they strutted around, crowed and showed off for the benefit of their visitors in the ecomania McIntosh County Poultry Show.

Lost – Wednesday of last week from Porum, Okla. 1 black hound dog, bob tail, branded letter H on left thigh; 1 brown hound dog with long tail branded letter H on left thigh. Will pay $15 for information to their recovery. Notify A.E. Hill, Porum, Oklahoma.

THE TUDOR SEDAN

The Ford Motor Co. today announced an addition to its line of cars – the Tudor Sedan, which brings to the public an entirely new style of Ford enclosed body.

It is a distinctive type designed to carry five passengers in compete comfort. The roof line is low and straight which with the larger radiator, nowsd standard on all Ford cars, gave Ford designers an opportunity to effect most graceful liens and at the same time a most dtudy construction.

FLOOD VICTIMS OFFERED HELP BY RED CROSS Destitute victims of recent floods in McIntosh County, were asked this week to take advantage of the financial assistance offered by disaster officials of the American Red Cross.

In view of the enormity of the disaster to residents of this territory and of the widespread damage done by the swollen floodwaters of Deep Fork and the North Canadian River, it was felt by both local and national Red Cross workers that hundreds of cases are unreported to the organization.

RESERVES GET COUNTY DRAFT CALL THURSDAY Thirteen men in the enlisted army reserve in Mc-Intosh County, left Eufaula Thursday morning for the induction center at Fort Sill, members of the county draft board announced this week.

NICHOLS TO QUIT CONGRESS PAPER STATES

Rumors are that Jack Nichols, second district congressman for five terms, will resign in the near future to accept a position with a national airline company.

A likely contender, who has been strongly urged by his friends to seek the position, is State Representatove Kirksey M. Nix of Eufaula.

McQUILLEN GETS CHOICE PAROLE BOARD OFFICE

John McQuillen, McIntosh County sheriff for 14 years, was named chief assistant pardon and parole officer for the state this week by Governor Roy J. Turner.

McQuillen began his career as a peace officer in Checotah. He served as chief of police here for two terms and was elected sheriff in 1930.

ENGINEERS GIVE SPECIFICIATIONS ON LOCAL DAMS Plans and specifications for two new reservoirs on the North and South Canadian rivers to cost $103 million have been prepared by U.S. army engineers in Tulsa, it was reported this week by Colonel C.H. Chorpening The projects will be discussed at a public meeting to be held in Eufaula Dec. 21.

Legion Cagers Still Winning Ball Games The American Legion basketball team coached by Red Hunter, remained undefeated in play this season when they defeated the Boynton veterans 35 to 25 Saturday night.

The team is now competing in the Victor tournament and expects to carry away top honors.

50 YEARS AGO McIntosh County Democrat Thursday, December 20, 1973

CHECOTAH GETS 2.6 MILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY Apex Smelting Co., Inc., a subsidiary of AMAX (American Metal Climax Inc.) and a member of the AMAX Aluminum Group has announced its plans to construct new secondary aluminum and alloyed zinc production facility in Checotah.

“The new plant will be built at the Industrial site, south of Checotah, on 25 acres at an estimated cost of $2.6 million,” said Daniel Moenich, president of Apex Smelting.

He said groundbreaking is slated to be within 45 to 60 days, with the plant being in full production by late 1974.

The plant will cover some 115,000 square feet and will be built in such a way as to allow for expansion to twice its capacity.

Pipe Company to Locate In City

Mayor Floyd Beaird has announced the Paramount Pipe Co. from Tulsa will locate at Checotah. They clean and re-bevel pipe for ONG and Jimco Pipe of Dallas. The company will employ 10 people starting Jan. 1.

Military News

Ronald Prince, son of Mr. and Mrs. Briston Prince of Checotah, has completed six weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.

He is now taking a five week Security Specialty course there and then will be stationed at Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma.

Prince signed up for a six-year enlistment. He will be home for the holidays on Dec. 25.

Health Department Opens

“Not only is today a great day for the city of Checotah, but it is also a great day for the health needs of all of McIntosh County,” said Mark Jones, administrator of the McIntosh County Health Department.

He made these remarks on Dec. 1, prior to the ribbon cutting that officially opened the new 5,000 square foot health building in downtown Checotah.

Lighting Contest Set For Local Homes

Friday, Dec. 18 through Tuesday Dec. 22 are the dates announced for residential judging for local homes competing in the Christmas lighting contest.

The annual Chamber of Commerce event is open to citizens residing in the corporate city limits of Checotah. Cash prizes will be award to locations within each of the four quadrants of town divided by Gentry Avenue and Broadway.

“Homes Tour” Prize Winners Announced Concluding the Sunday afternoon festivities of the Checotah Landmark Preservation Society’s Holiday Homes Tour was the announcement of door prize winners. For the first time in the 11th annual event, all the ticket holders are residents of the immediate city area.

Winners included Wilma Killingsworth, Marianne Callich, Betty Shenault and Martha Henshaw.
