THE OLD OAKEN BUCKET
The prolonged drought has exhausted the supply of water in the water works reservoir and as a result Superintendent Rinnert is busy today cutting off the service to all consumers. He states everyone will be treated alike and that all will be cut off.
Enough water remains in the reservoir for fire protection, and it will be kept for that purpose until more comes.
The shortage of water has caused the officials and citizens to think about arrangements for securing an additional supply.
Checotah Gun Club
The members of the Checotah Gun Club have been having practice shoots almost every afternoon during the past week and some excellent scores have been made.
George Odom holds the best score, breaking 25 straight at Wednesday afternoon’s shoot. Dr. Walers is a close second with 24.
The gun club grounds are now located in the John Harper pasture northwest of town where a house has been built for the trap.
Commence Work Next Week Col. Cheesie McIntosh has definitely decided on plans for the building to be erected on his lot recently purchased on south Broadway next to the new Price building and work will be commenced on it next week.
The building will have a frontage of 25 feet, will be 80 feet deep and two stories high.
••••• 100 Years Ago McIntosh County Democrat Thursday, March 6, 1924 EUFAULA BANK SUSPENDS
The First National Bank of Eufaula, one of the oldest institutions in eastern Oklahoma, was closed by decision of the board of directors Monday. The bank had capital of $50,000 and carried approximately $250,000 in deposits. This is the second bank difficulty in Eufaula in the past three weeks. The Oklahoma State Bank, a smaller institution, closed its doors previously.
Opens Variety Store
W.H. Draper, a former well known Checotah citizen who for several years has been living in Muskogee, is back in Checotah again and has opened a variety store in the corner room on Gentry avenue directly west of the depot. He expects to carry a full and complete line of variety goods and solicits a share of your trade.

LOCAL DROUGTH BEATS 1936 RECORD The present dry spell in McIntosh county is the longest on record, surpassing the record drought year of 1936, according to the weather records of Golden Berry, local observer.
Schools to Close To Harvest Crops
The Checotah city schools will close Friday, Sept. 10, for a period of a month or six weeks to permit students to assist in harvesting crops, Fred Ole, superintendent, announced this week.
Crops of both cotton and corn are short this year and it may take only a few weeks to gather most of the crop, although cotton picking will probably continue for several months.
THIRD WAR LOAN CAMPAIGN IS LAUNCHED
The third war loan campaign, in which the county has been assessed a quota of $215,000 was launched Thursday night in a series of school district meetings in the north half of the county, according to the announcement of L.K. Sharpe, war loan administrator.

Baptists Oppose Repeal Movement
Wayne Boyd Back From Naval Service
Delegates to the Muskogee Baptist association convention in Sallisaw last week unanimously adopted a resolution opposing repeal of the state prohibition laws, Garland Anderson, clerk, reported.
Announcement for the return to the United States for subsequent discharge of Pvt. Wayne E. Boyd, son of Mrs. Grace Dufton, Checotah, was made recently at the Itami Air Force Base, Itami, Japan where Boyd was stationed as a duty soldier.
Private Boyd entered the military service in California in July 1940 and served in the Pacific theater of operations until June 1945.
He was discharged in the same month and reenlisted at Williams Field on April 12, 1947. He was assigned to the fifth air force and then reassigned to the Itami Air Base on the main Japanese island of Honshu.

NEWS OF SERVICEMEN Michael Ashley
Mr. Michael R. Ashley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Santford Ashley of W.S.R. Checotah, has enlisted in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Ashley, 1972 graduate of Checotah High School, departed on March 7, to undergo six weeks of basic military training at Lackland A.F.B., Texas.
He selected the Electronical Aptitude Areas for a six-year enlistment
No City Election for Checotah in ‘74
All four incumbent City Councilmen filed for reelection. Due to the fact that all were unopposed, there will be no city election in Checotah this year.
Checotah Sweeps Muskogee Show For the second straight year, Checotah swept the annual Muskogee Junior Livestock show.

Underwood to release first album “Some Hearts” Nov. 15
Checotah native Carrie Underwood rocked Eastern Oklahoma this year with the announcement of her being named the fourth American Idol winner in May. Now, the 22-year-old CHS graduate is getting ready to release her first album, “Some Hearts,” on Nov. 15.
Creeks Plan for casino
When asked about any preliminary plans Creek Nation might have concerning a timetable for construction of their new casino facility at Fountainhead Lodge, Chief of Staff Mike Flud said that they’re in a “wait and see” mode for the time being.
