Senior seeks help to fund her own instrument
By LADONNA RHODES STAFF WRITER

The Checotah Band Boosters are currently raising funds for senior Alyssa Quimby to be able to purchase her our instrument for college.

Barbara Ogden, Checotah Band Boosters treasure and chairman of the Band Boosters Instrument Fund, stated, “Our instrument fund helps to raise money for students who are pursuing a college education and will be majoring or minoring in Music Education/ Performance. These students do not have a personal instrument of their own and have borrowed a school instrument throughout high school. So this instrument fund helps them to purchase an instrument to play in college in order to further their music education.”

This year Checotah Band Boosters are asking for assistance for Quimby, who has been accepted into the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and will be playing the flute on a music scholarship.

“Alyssa is one of our students who has used a school horn through high school and will need to purchase her own in order to fulfill her scholarship requirements,” Ogden said. “Alyssa has been a member of the Class of Checotah Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band for six years. In that time, she has had the honor of being in the EDBDA Honor Band, OSSBDA Honor Band, and has received superior ratings for solo and ensemble contests on district and state levels. She has also received outstanding flute solo and duet ratings at preliminary and state levels.

“Alyssa was chosen as top soloist at a marching contest in Reeds Springs, MO. She also has a 4.0 average and is active in several organizations at school. Alyssa also volunteers her time after school, tutoring in music and academics.”..

The Checotah Band Boosters hope to get enough donations to gift Quimby a quality flute to play in college. They have set up a special account at Peoples National Bank under Checotah Band Boosters Instrument Fund and hope people from the community will consider donating to this student who will go on to do great things.

Checks should be made out to Checotah Band Boosters with “Instrument Fund” in the memo. Donations can also be mailed to: Checotah Band Boosters Instrument Fund P.O. Box 284, Checotah, OK 74426
