Eastern Cherokee
Commendable progress is being made in the furtherance of the Eastern Cherokee payment of over $4 million, which will result in one of the largest per capita payments ever made to the Cherokee people.
Senator Owen has been persistent in hurrying the matter through both the courts and Treasury Dept. and it would seem that his efforts will be rewarded at an early day.
The Pride of the West
A western comedy-drama in four big acts, presented by Dana Thompson’s big show, will exhibit at Checotah next Monday, April 25, under a big waterproof tent.
All leading journals of the day pronounce this as one of the foremost attractions, traveling in her own private Pullman cars. One night, Monday, April 25.
New Press Installed
The Times big newspaper press arrived last week, and this issue of the paper is printed from it. It will probably be two or three weeks before the machine is perfectly adjusted to do good work, hence the print this week is a poor sample of what it will do.

NARROW ESCAPE
Lt. C. McMullen, one of Uncle Sam’s air aces, narrowly escaped death early Sunday afternoon when his plane crashed to the ground a few miles south of Checotah.
McMullen, who was alone, sustained only scratches and bruises. He had taken off from the Hatbox flying field in Muskogee destined for San Antonio.

Records Give Wisconsin Longest Concrete Road Where are the longest continuous stretches of concrete roads?
A recent search of highway records gives Wisconsin the honor with 93 miles. The contestants are from every section of the country and show how the good-roads movement is being carried out.

Vicious Dogs Kill Farmers Livestock
A vicious pack of dog has killed several head of livestock in the Checotah community during recent weeks, according to nearby farmers.
MURDER COUNT FILED IN DEATH OF FARM YOUTH Charges of murder face Fred Reynolds, Cathay farmer, who is being held in the county jail following the death of Clifford Murphy, Brooken boy, who was hit by a car at Eufaula last Saturday night said to have been driven by Reynolds.
The Murphy boy, accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pat Murphy, and several other families who were enroute to California to pick cotton, had stopped in Eufaula to shop when the boy was struck as he stood by a trailer from which had just alighted.
War Bond Drive Exceeds Quota By Big Margin In Final Push McIntosh County’s war bond drive went over the top with sales far exceeding the quota, it was revealed this week in a statement issued by L.K. Sharpe, vice-chairman of county sales.
Sales during the final week soared to the unprecedented total of$336,914, which is 153 percent in excess of the county’s quota of $215,100.
The county ranked second in the state in excess sales above the stipulated quota.

Drys To Present Speaker In City David C. Shapard, director of the United Drys of Oklahoma, will speak in the high school auditorium at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Garlaad Anderson, local Baptist pastor, announced this week.
Shapard is an attorney-at-law in Oklahoma City and a veteran of the recent war. He is considered an able speaker.
TURNER STUDYS BIG BOND ISSUE TO BUILD ROADS $250 Million Needed A proposal to submit to the people at the general election in November, 1950, the question of a road bond issue for construction of roads and buildings at state institutions is being given serious consideration by Gov. Roy Turner.
The governor said he is studying the proposal forom members of the legislature for a road bond issue up to $250 million and his own idea of the need of a bond issue for buildings at state institutions.

New Superintendent for Checotah Schools The Checotah School Board revealed last week that Bill Patton of Norman has been hired as the new Superintendent of the Checotah School System. In making the announcement, they stated that they were well-pleased with Mr. Patton’s qualifications and feel he will make an excellent addition to the present school system.
Latham Takes Job At Hartshorne
Mr. Harold Latham, Checotah School Superintendent who resigned his position in January, announced last week that he has accepted the position of Superintendent of Harshorne Public Schools.
Mr. Latham, who has been with Checotah Schools for 21 years, came here from Perkins in 1953 and was the football coach for nine years.

Checotah celebrates Veterans’ Day ’05 in Style Checotah proved their extreme community pride and dignity Friday during the Veterans’ Days activities that echoed through the town all day.
It started with the Checotah High School students providing a free breakfast for all veterans at 8:30 a.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Next on the town’s list was the annual Veterans’ Day Parade.
