Tulsa head coach Angie Nelp Receives Contract Extension

After posting the schools best season in 19 years, Tulsa Womens Basketball Coach Angie Nelp was awarded a contract extension through the 2030 season, it was announced today by Vice President & Director of Athletics Rick Dickson.

Nelp has posted the second- most wins in school history with a 59-34 record for a .634 winning percentage in three seasons.

“In three short years, Angie has transformed our womens basketball program into American Athletic Conference Champions. She has developed an exciting brand of play while the programs support has dramatically increased during her tenure. Angie has recruited well and ingrained a strong culture that has laid the foundation for further success,” said Dickson.

“I am extremely thankful to The University of Tulsa athletics and university administration for their leadership, support and confidence. TU is such a special place for me and my family. I am honored to have this opportunity to continue to lead our womens basketball program. What we have accomplished thus far is a testament to our players, our staff and the culture they’ve helped to create. I’m thrilled about what lies ahead for Tulsa women’s basketball,” said Nelp.

Nelp’s 2023-24 team is coming off a 25-10 campaign that included winning the American Athletic Conference regular season title and appearing in the postseason WBIT. The Golden Hurricane tied for most conference wins in school history with a 13-5 mark, equaling the 13 wins from 2005-06.

Her first two teams posted 17 wins each year becoming the only coach in school history with a winning record in her first two seasons and the first to reach the 50-win plateau in three seasons. There was only one previous time that Tulsa had compiled three straight winning seasons, 2003-2006.

With this season’s quarterfinal appearance in the WBIT, Nelp has taken two of her three teams to postseason competition, including the second round of the 2022 WNIT.

Nelp became the 11th head coach in school history when she was appointed to the position on April 12, 2021. She came to Tulsa following four seasons on the Arizona State coaching staff, including her final year as associate head coach. Nelp also served on coaching staffs at Arkansas, Marquette, Mercer and Rice.

A native of Eufaula, Okla., Nelp formerly Angie Gorton, starred at Canadian High School and led her team to the 1998 Oklahoma State Championship while earning Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year accolades her senior season. She went on to an All-America career at Colorado State, where she helped lead the Rams to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
