Bobby Gene Hogan was born in Rentiesville, Oklahoma, on November 27, 1927, to Jordan and Vernon Ross Hogan. He was one of nine children, the son of a sharecropper.
Bob grew up during the Great Depression and developed a strong work ethic that defined the rest of his life.
He began working at Sharpe’s Department Store at the age of 16. He graduated from Checotah High School and then served in the US Army from 1946 to 1947. While serving, he met a pretty young nurse named Irma Lee Dailey. They were married on July 3, 1952. Upon discharge from the army, he continued what would become a lifelong career in retail, as a “rag peddler.”
In 1953, he and Irma moved to Holdenville, Oklahoma, where he became the manager of that Sharpe’s location. Their son, Jim, was born that same year.
In 1965, the Hogans moved to Checotah and Bob assumed the position of Vice-President of Sharpe’s which he held until he retired.
Bob was an active member of First Baptist Church, Checotah. He loved the Lord and knew Him as his Lord and Savior. He also was involved in multiple civic organizations such as Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club and Lion’s Club.
During his time in Holdenville, Bob served as a scoutmaster and maintained a relationship with those scouts until his death. Bob loved playing golf. Over the years, these men returned to honor Bob with the Annual Bob Hogan Open.
After a long and fulfilled life, he passed away peacefully in his home here in Checotah, on Saturday, June 1, at the age of 96. He loved Checotah and the people of Checotah.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Lee, of 59 years, his parents, and eight brothers and sisters.
