Accident claims 2 Checotahns days apart

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the victims of a deadly wreck that happened around 11:30 a.m. on September 17 on State Loop 335 and Soncy Road in Potter County, TX.

According to DPS, a 2004 Volvo semi driven by Alan Fernandez-Fierro, 36, of Hereford, TX, was traveling northeast on Loop 335 and approaching the intersection with FM 2590 (Soncy Road).

Meanwhile, a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Daniel Neely, 75, of Checotah, OK, was headed northwest at the stop sign on FM 2590 when he failed to yield the right-of-way and pulled into the path of the semi.

The semi-driver tried to brake and swerve to avoid the SUV but struck the driver’s side of the Jeep as the semi traveled over a concrete median and came to rest facing north in the center median.

The Grand Cherokee spun to the right, traveled over a concrete median, and struck a light pole before coming to rest facing east in the center median.

Neelywaspronounced dead at the scene by the Potter County Justice of the Peace.

A passenger in the Jeep, Jeanne Morgan, 75, also of Checotah, was taken to an Amarillo hospital in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries three days later.
