Checotah Stories from the past

A BAD BLAZE

One of the fiercest fires as well as one of the most expensive Checotah has experienced in years was the destruction of the Oklahoma Hay and Grain Company’s big storage warehouse east of the Kathy tracks last Sunday night.

This mammoth warehouse was erected more than a year ago as a storage for hay and held its capacity until a short time ago when several cars were shipped and arrangements were about completed for the marketing of the 730 tons which remained.

The fire, no doubt the work of an incendiary.

Stores Closed for Armistice Day

From a business standpoint Checotah was indeed a very “dead” place Tuesday. With the exception of the drug stores and post office, every business house in the city was closed for the entire day.

While no program or other observance of the day was held in the city, the streets were profusely decorated with American flags as a tribute to the memory of the American soldiers.

CITY TO AWARD WATER PROJECT HOORAY! It’s here at last!

A nice new water system for Checotah which has been a visionary dream for 10 years and seemingly as elusive as the legendary “will o’ the wisp,” will be built here soon, if present plans of the city council materialize.

A notice to contractors, which requires sealed bids to be presented to the city clerk, was drawn up by the engineering firm representing the city and sent to the publisher, stating that bids would be received on Nov. 26.

Invasion Of Europe Is Started Tuesday

The long awaited invasion of Europe was launched by the allied armies at 2 o’clock Tuesday morning in a thrust at the Cherbourg peninsula of France, spearheaded by tanks, flame throwers and a mighty aerial armada.

The allied forces achieved a tract surprise and apparently caught the Germans flat footed. Hundreds of thousands of troops poured ashore at isolated spots along the Normandy coast and were met by only moderate fire from guns and fortifications which the Germans had been building for the past four years.

Ed Haynes Exhibits Freak 2-Bodied Pig A freak pig with one head and two bodies was born to a duroc jersey sow Thursday morning, owned by Ed Haynes, prominent farmer 10 miles northwest of Checotah.

Haynes said the pig was born in a litter with eight normal pigs. It had four front feet and four back feet, all perfectly formed.

The animal lived about three minutes.

Haynes said the sow, a registered duroc, was giving birth to her first litter. He plans to pickle the pig in a glass jar.

Well, so much for putting your faith in people’s common sense.

That’s the latest word from state and local officials who, thanks to a spate of weekend wildfires across Oklahoma, have reinstated the burn ban that has put the brakes on outdoor burnings since last November.

Citing a series of wildfires over the weekend and worsening weather conditions, Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry reinstated a limited burn ban for the vast majority of Oklahoma’s 77 counties.
