CONTRACT LET FOR SEWER Low bid $29,602.40

When the city council convened Monday night to open the bids for the construction of Checotah’s sanitary sewer system the council chamber was too small to contain all who sought admission and many were turned away and when the mayor finally rapped for order the council, the gentlemen who came in hopes of landing the contract and the citizens who found an entrance were packed like so many sardines in a box.

The body of Thos. Martin, a full-blood Indian living east of Oktaha, was found early Thursday morning lying beside the railroad tracks near the Creamery. The body was discovered by G.C. Hood who immediately notified Sheriff Bob Russell and Chief of Police Erv Kelley.

Martin’s head was considerably bruised up and covered with blood. It is not known whether he was attempting to board or get off the train that killed him. He had been dead only a short time. His identity was ascertained by a First National check book in his pocket, the stubs showing that he had issued checks to a number of Checotah businessmen. He was quite well known here doing most of his business with Checotah merchants.

The body was taken to the Checotah Hardware undertaking parlor. —- Since the above was written it is learned that the Indian’s real name was Sam Fixico and whose failing was writing bogus checks.

He formerly lived at Dustin and according to reports kept the officers busy.

Officers from Dustin were in Checotah Wednesday night on his trail with warrants for arrest for issuing bogus checks.

Checotah native and former Detroit Lions star Tracy Scroggins has canceled his annual summer youth program this year due to allegations that the program’s former administrator, Marla Smith, embezzled between $3,500 and $5,000 from his personal bank account.

Scroggins alleges that Smith, who is currently a teacher at Midway High School, stole his identity on several occasions and wired herself unauthorized amounts of money via Wester Union – sometimes in amounts as large as $1,700 at a time.
