BEHIND BARS

Captured in Colorado

NOW IN MUSKOGEE JAIL

Bob and Amon Davis, wanted for the murder of Deputy Sheriff James Work at Porum on the afternoon of May 5, were arrested in Denver following an altercation the two had with a group of card players on a train headed for Colorado.

The escape of the two Davis boys after the killing is almost miraculous. With the whole countryside alarmed, the two men, without leaving the saddle even for a drink of water, rode about 100 miles to Cushing. Even then they did not leave their horses until the train pulled in. Then they quickly dismounted and, jumping aboard, were off for the west.

GOOD WATER IN SIGHT

At the regular meeting of the City Council Monday night and at a special meeting held Tuesday night the matter of securing good water for Checotah was the principal matter for discussion and action.

For several weeks the city dads have been working on the proposition of hooking onto the city lakes for a supply as the river water has become almost unusual on account of salt.

At the conclusion of the meeting a plan was worked out whereby it is believed that within a short time our people will have good water.

The plan is to pipe the lake water to the filter at the river after which it will be pumped back into the settling basin on top of the hill.

Stidham Sergeant Given Silver Star

Sgt. Herman H. Payne of Stidham has been awarded the Silver Star posthumously for gallantry in action while serving with the first armored division in the Fifth army front in Italy.

Payne, a section leader in a machine gun platoon and his section were receiving heavy sniper fire from approximately 300 yards in front of their positions. The enemy was so well concealed that it was almost impossible to find the sniper strongpoint. Moving from one area to another, crawling and listening while trying to locate the snipers, Payne finally spotted the position.

He issued his orders to his men and personally led the assault against the position.

During the assault the enemy laid down a concentrated barrage of artillery and mortars. Disregarding the heavy fire he continued to lead his men forward in the advance. Payne was killed by a direct hit from one of the self-propelled enemy guns.

Jann Ledbetter’s eyes were full of tears as she talked about the kids at Marshall Elementary School and the relationships she has formed with them and their parents.

And then there’s the staff at the school, some that were at the building when she walked in 33 years ago.
