Checotah Stories from the past

114 YEARS AGO McIntosh County Democrat Thursday, June 1, 1911

BAD TO WORSE Two Dead, Several Wounded in Porum Battle The excitement and terror occasioned by the recent killing of a deputy sheriff at Porum by Bob and Amon Davis and others had only partially died away when the community was thrown into another spasm even worse than the first.

So many versions of the last affray are current as to make it impossible to give an accurate report.

However, we give the following written by a representative of the Times-Democrat, who was at the scene: With two already dead, and two more extremely likely to cross the great divide four killings will probably be laid to Starr and Davis, and the recent killing of Deputy Sheriff Jim Work, makes a total of homicides for which the Davis gang, composed of Bob and Amon Davis, now in the Muskogee county jail, and Joe Davis and Pony Starr are responsible.

The Starr home a mile northeast of Porum, just beyond the outskirts of the town, presents all the appearances of a battlefield except that the dead and wounded are not there.

Nearly 100 rifle bullets riddled the house, over 25 of them penetrating the screen door from which Starr and Davis fired continuously, while Mrs. Starr loaded the guns.

COUNTY FIELD MEET

The annual literary and field and track meet of both the city and rural schools of McIntosh county will be held in the city on Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11. One of the largest crowds in the history of this classic is expected to be in attendance, the rivalry of the various schools for the honors already having been manifested.

The meet will open at 1:30 Friday afternoon at the high school building with preliminaries in boys declamation, girls reading and the choruses from the different rural schools.

Hoover Told to Shake Up “Dry” Bureau WASHINGTON, D.C. – Increased attention was directed to prohibition enforcement Tuesday as Sen. Borah, Republican, Idaho, the foremost campaigner for Pres. Hoover’s election on the dry issue, assailed the entire personnel charged with making the Volstead act effective. He said they would never enforce the law.

George Flannery, a Pittsburg county farmer living about four miles south of Eufaula, was run down and killed by an automobile driven by Pat O’Reilly, a Eufaula youth, near Flannery’s home around 10 o’clock Sunday night.

Driving on highway 73 at about 35 miles an hour, Flannery, afoot, was walking south, while the O’Reilly car was driving north, when the man for some unknown reason stepped directly in front of the auto.

Checotahan Blasts Japanese Base

In a grim determination to strike home a devastating blow to the Japanese island stronghold of Boroe, George Nichols of Checotah was a member of the crew which flew on despite an engine out and back-back fire expected in the target area.

Prior to reaching the target, number three engine was lost, but rather than return to base on the first mission the crew unhesitatingly decided to continue with the Liberator bomber to drop a heavy load on the Japanese held fortification.

Bronze Star Medal Is Awarded Duvall

For successfully directing a rear-guard action under an intense concentration of enemy fire, Sgt. Woodrow T. Duvall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Zell Duvall of Hitchita, has been awarded the bronze star medal.

Returning from a hazardous patrol behind enemy lines in New Guinea, the men in Duvall’s platoon were attempting to board a landing barge, when a large Jap force attacked from the nearby jungle. Sgt. Duvall, exposing himself to the enemy, called his squad and directed their fire so effectively that the enemy retired, enabling the evacuation to continue without a casualty.

Only after the balance of the platoon was safely aboard did he join them.

EUFAULA JURY FAILS TO INDICT JIM WHITELEY Jimmy Whiteley, McIntosh county’s fiery county attorney, was cleared by a deadlocked grand jury Wednesday of misbehavior in his role as a prosecutor, since taking the position by appointment several months ago.

The session was called by district Judge W.A. Lackey after he had been presented a petition bearing 160 names demanding an investigation of the county attorney’s official acts.

Whitely recently brought lewd conduct charges against W.E. Dickey, a country school teacher at Cathay, accusing him of snapping the elastic of his girl student’s panties. The action led to the petition to the grand jury by Dickey’s supporters.
