The Kentucky Derby was a soggy but sensational race this year as Journalism and Sovereignty went neck and neck to a sloppy finish with Sovereignty taking the crown.
Fulfilling a dream decades in the making, the homebred stallion Sovereignty blazed past the favored Journalism to win its first Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs.
At first Sovereignty appreciated the strong pace set by Citizen Bull, which was last year‘s Champion. There was also Stalking Owen Almighty who advanced to the challenge, but struck the front at the top of the lane. However, it was Journalism that raced with contention as Sovereignty followed his wake.
Unfortunately as Journalism passed Owen Almighty, Sovereignty was bearing down ready to pass them all. As the two thoroughbreds fought to the finish, Sovereignty edged out Journalism by one and a half lengths cinching his title. Journalism salvaged runner up and Baeza came in third. Final Gambit closed from a far and came in fourth, while Owen Almighty came in fifth place.
Another horse named Publisher also raced this year and came in fourteenth.
