CREDIT TO ANY SCHOOL
The Democrat herewith gives to its readers a picure of Checotah’s new high school building to be erected on the block of ground just east of the present school building, work upon which will be underway in short time, the object being to have it completed as ner the opening of school in Sepember as possible.
The new building is admirable adapted for high school purposes as well as for the accomodtion of the higher grades.
The basement story is arranged for both girls andboys, the boys having a play room and toilet room and a large room for manual training and the girls a play room, toilet and domestic science room.
Much space in this story is given to a large gymnasium. The basement is well agboves the ground to admit plnt oflgth anvenilatin.
TO PROTECT MOTHER
A report reached this city from Hoffman Monday that Ralph Edwards, a lad of 17 years, had shot and instantly killed his father during Sunday night when the latter was making an assault upon his mother.
The details are meager but the best information obtainable is that Edwards has been in the habit of going home drunk and beating his wife and otherwise making himself obnoxious about the house.

CHECOTAH WINS ALL
The annual literary, field and track meet of the schools of McIntosh county was held in Checotah Friday and Saturday of last week which resulted in Checotah winning the high honors in high school and grades in both the literary and athletic events.

Council Votes Another Water Bond Election The city council of Checotah at a mass meeting in the city hall Monday night Jan. 10 unanimously voted to hold another water bond election on Jan. 28, for the proposed construction of a $40,000 dam on the Tabor site four miles west of the city.
Sleet Storms Sweep Eastern Part of State Mercury Skids to Low Mark
Blinding sleet storms lashed Checotah Wednesday and Thursday and buried the city under a blanket of more than four inches of snow and ice in the most severe cold wave of the year.

Bold Hijackers Rob Checotah Citizens and
Take Automobile
Masked bandits operating as brazenly as the Jessie James of old, engulfed the city this week, robbing private citizens and stealing automobiles under the cloak of darkness as county and city officers scampered in search of suspicious characters.
Waterworks Loan Approved
Checotah’s dream of an unlimited supply of pure water for domestic and industrial use which has haunted city administrations for the past 10 years, is about to be realized, it was shown in federal report received at the PWA office in Eufaula.
COUNTY TRACK AND LITERARY MEET TO BE HELD IN CHECOTAH First Program in 3 years
Hundreds of high school athletes of McIntosh county will gather in Checotah on Friday and Saturday May 4 and 5 to participate in the track and literary meet arranged by the executive committee of the McIntosh County Teachers association.

Paul Carr Killed In Pacific Action
Paul Carr, center on the Checotah football team in 1941 and 1942, was killed in action in the southwest Pacific while serving with the U.S. Navy, his mother has been advised.
Carr was married to Goldia Lee Jamerson when he returned to Checotah on a recent furlough. He formerly attended school at Central High.
DEFEAT OF JAPANESE BATTLE FLEET TOLD BY BOYD Checotah Boy Takes Part in Historic Fleet Action Bob Boyd of Checotah was a member of the crew of the USS Phoenix, a light cruiser which participated in the historic battle of Sukrigao Stait, in which the Japanese fleet suffered a crushing defeat in the naval engagement with Admiral Kincaid’s Seventh Fleet near Leyte Island in the Philippines.

Mrs. Pleas Wood was relieved this week to hear that her brother, Pvt. Leonard Tinney, is gradually recovering from wounds received in the terrific Battle of France.
Tinney, who sustained the injury in September, has already been awarded the Purple Heart as he slowly regains his strength in a hospital in England.

Ples Woods Dies In Fall From Horse East of Checotah
Ples Woods, 54, a resident of the Checotah area for 50 years, died in a Muskogee hospital Tuesday morning as the result of injuries sustained when he was thrown from a horse Friday morning at his farm five miles east of Checotah.
Woods was found unconscious a short distance from his home after his riderless horse had wandered back to the house.
He suffered a fractured skull and facial injuries.
Paul Clark Enlists in Army
Paul R. Clark, son of Mrs. Virgil Clark, Checotah, has reported to the 10th Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kansas for 14 weeks of basic military training.

Cowbelle Rodeo to Promote Beef
“Ride ‘em cowgirl!” will be an appropriate cheer at the Chectoah Round-up Club arena on Sunday, May 4, as the McIntosh County Cowbelles present their All-Girl Rodeo.
That’s right – ALL GIRL Rodeo. The girls will don the big hats, spurs and chaps more commonly seen on their male counterparts and challenge the broncs and bulls, steers and calves of the Billy Martin Rodeo company.
They will compete in bareback riding, steer riding, calf roping, steer undecorating, goat tying, barrel racing and pole bending.

Adamek, Council discuss govt’ changes
A special meeting of the Checotah City Council Tuesday evening aimed to weigh the pros and cons of some changes to the current form of city government.
And, according to Vice Mayor Jim Adamek, the reason for the proposed changes was clear: holding elected officials responsible for doing their jobs.

Commissioners declare disaster; more rain on way
Days of rain in McIntosh County have washed out roads, caused major damage to public and private property and pushed the level of Lake Eufaula to near record numbers.
Monday morning McIntosh County commissioners declared the county a disaster area, the first step in an effort to obtain federal funds to help pay for the damage.
