Checotah senior Ruby Folkner received the first McIntosh County Democrat (MCD) Greg Dixon award. The award is presented to an athlete that represented the school and competed in multiple sports at a high level.

Ruby Folkner was the recipient after going to state in cross-country, helping lead the Lady Wildcats to a 13-13 record and an area appearance in basketball and competing in track. Folkner was named the Offensive Player of the Year for her part in basketball.

Greg Dixon was a 1985 Checotah graduate that was a member of the No.3 ranked Wildcats’ football team and won a national championship at the University of Oklaho- ma. Dixon went on to become a district judge and a member of the Checotah Athlete Hall of Fame. Dixon passed away this year after a long battle with cancer.

“This will be an annual award in an effort to let Greg’s legacy live on through it,” Sports Editor Rodney Haltom said.
