The 59th Old Settlers Day weekend went off without a hitch this Friday and Saturday in Checotah and some of the cutest little cowgirls and cowboys came out to celebrate.
The excitement began Friday night at the annual Checotah Round-Up Club Rodeo. A special gun raffle was held for Greg Berry, who is recovering from heart surgery. Bear Arms MFG donated the gun to help with hospital expenses.
As always the Checotah Lions Club served hot pancakes and sausage to all the early risers on Saturday. Then the Checotah Chamber of Commerce hosted the town’s tradition of good ol’ fashion family fun with turtle races, frog jumping contests, water balloon toss games and more.
The FFA even helped jail the outlaws that showed up to start a ruckus.
The Firefighter’s Challenge brought in the crowds as local volunteer firefighters competed for bragging rights and a traveling trophy. Last year Checotah Fire Department won the competition, but this year the FAIC Fire Department went home with all the bragging rights.
The first Old Settlers Day was started by the Checotah Jaycees as a reunion and a way to recognize the cowboy heritage of the city. The town still loves honoring its heritage with activities for everyone year after year. Though the Old Settlers Day parade was rained out this year, the Chamber is going to circle the wagons and come back next year with even more exciting things to do at their 60th OSD celebration. So saddle up and get ready for one wild ride!
