Auditions for The Dancing Princesses open to all

If you’ve ever thought acting on stage might be fun, here’s your chance to find out.

The Eufaula Performing and Arts Club is opening auditions for their next play to any would-be actor ages 10 and up.

THE DANCING PRINCESSES is an adaptation of the German fairy tale, THE WORN-OUT DANCING SHOES, published in Grimm’s Fairy Tales in 1815. The duke has 12 daughters who sleep in twelve beds in the same bedroom, the door which he locks every night. But every morning, the duke unlocks the door to find their shoes worn out as if they have been dancing all night.

The duke is going broke keeping his daughters in shoes, so he promises that any man who can solve the mystery can marry any of the twelve princesses and inherit his kingdom.

All EPAC productions so far have featured school-age actors, but adult males are encouraged to audition for the role of the duke, the princes who come to solve the mystery, and the duke’s servant, who narrates the play and could also be played by a female.

Other roles are three princesses: Molly, Polly, and Holly; Juanita the witchette; Ashton, a poor orphan; and Goodella, Ashton’s fairy godsister.

The adaptation was written by local playwright Lenore Bechtel who will also direct the play, with local dance instructor Dennylu Powell directing the choreography. Rehearsals will be held for a few hours five days a week for three weeks, with performances to be scheduled for the fourth week.

Because the play’s intended audience is children, EPAC hopes to schedule a performance at Eufaula Elementary School during the fall semester’s opening week.

Auditions will be in the Follansbee Room at Eufaula Memorial Library from 2-4:30 p.m. Monday, July 21.

All who audition will be asked to return at 9 a.m. the next day, Tuesday, July 22, when roles will be assigned and a first read-through done. All actors will automatically become members of EPAC and informed of all future activities.

Only those able to rehearse on the following schedule should come to the auditions: July 21 2-4:30 pm. July 22 4-6:45 pm July 23 10:30 – 12:30 July 24 4-6:45 pm. July 25 1-4:45 pm. July 29 2:30-6:45 July 30 10:30 – 12:30 July 31 4-6:45 August 1 1-4:45 pm. August 4 1-6:45 p.m. August 5 1-6:45 p.m. August 6 10 – 12:30 p.m.

August 7 4-6:45 pm.

August 12 10 – 6:45 p.m.
