Dr. Montgomery Injured
Dr. A. B. Montgomery sustained a severe fracture of the right arm this morning while cranking his automobile.
The gasoline suddenly exploded, causing the crank to kick back with great violence, catching the doctor’s arm and snapping it like a pipestem.
The injured member was set by Drs. Nesbit and Thompson and the doctor was taken to his home, where he will be laid up for some time. (Monday’s Muskogee Times-Democrat)
CHANGE IN REXALL STORE
A business deal of considerable importance was made this week when Messrs. John Bain and John Murray purchased of Ira Marsh the Rexall drug store located on Gentry avenue.

Local Banks Receive Memorial Half Dollars The first consignment of Confederate Half Dollars, minted by the United States Government as a tribute to the valor of the Soldiers of the South, which are to be simultaneously released throughout the nation on July 3, have been received by the various banks of Checotah.
The issuance of these commemorative coins by the National Government is an event of the greatest significance to the South. It is a gesture of friendliness on the part of the nation to which the South will spontaneously respond.

Fire Threatens Local Business District Friday Fire of undetermined origin which for a time threatened to wipe out the entire business district of Checotah destroyed the building at the corner of Gentry avenue and Front street early last Friday morning after firemen from both Eufaula and Checotah had been summoned to extinguish the flames.
Schools Show Big Attendance Gain For 1930 Attendance records were shattered in the Checotah school district for the year1930, it was revealed his week by J.D. Dunlap, superintendent of city schools, following the recent enumeration which showed a total of 934 pupils of school age compared with 802 a year ago.

Checotah Bandit Killed, One captured in Miami Checotah’s “Big-time” gunmen, Leroy Dennison and Frank Shinn, who together with Blue Howard, are believed responsible for the crimewave that hit this city six weeks go met their doom this week at the hands of Miami police.
Dennison and a man known only as “Bill” were killed and Shinn was captured following a pistol battle in which Jack Dunaway, ace shot of Miami peace officers, was also slain.
Sharpe Purchases Dry Goods Stock
The Sharpe Dry Goods company has purchased a bankrupt stock of clothing and wearing apparel from a Tahlequah concern and moved it to the store here.
The majority of the cost was closed out in Tahlequah during the past month.
The stock is now being rearranged and improvement made in the store.

CALL TO COLORS ANSWERED BY 48 COUNTY YOUTHS
The army beckoned this week for 48 additional McIntosh county youths, who will be asked to report for military training February 26.
All of the men have previously passed their induction physical examinations.
Elgin Neumeyer Killed In Action
Wednesday a message came from the war department notifying Mr. and Mrs. Gus Neumeyer that their oldest son, Sgt. Elgin Neumeyer, had been killed in action in the Pacific theater of war.
Neumeyer, a machine gunner in the field artillery, had been in the Pacific war zone for 16 months.
Elgin attended the Council Hill schools where he was prominent in school activities.

Weevils Damage Early Cotton Crop
Cotton insects, especially the boll weevils, are showing up in considerable numbers in early cotton in the county, according to Al Christy, county agent.
The U.S. department of agriculture is predicting the largest infestation of boll weevils this year that the county ever had.
Population Drops in Second District
McIntosh county led the entire second congressional district in population loss with a 6,273 decresefothepa10 years, it was announced by district census officials this week.

Highway 69 Will Receive Top Priority By Governor
Last Friday six members of the Checotah Chamber of Commerce attended a highway appreciation luncheon held in Muskogee and sponsored by the Muskogee Chamber.
Gov. David Boren was the principal speaker and he told a delighted crowd that the four-laning of Highway 69 has received from hi office and the Highway Commission “top priority” and he went on to promise that most sections of 69 would be either finished, started or bids let to start work on them by the end of his term.
Fireworks On Display At Eufaula
There will be a fireworks display at the Eufaula Fairgrounds the night of July 4th beginning at 10:30 p.m.
Everyone is cordially welcomed to come see the beautiful display which will include “niagra falls” and “space wheels.”

Rose, candidate, fishing tourney pioneer, dies at 71 Longtime Lake Eufaula fixture, “Save Our Water” member, and candidate for State Representative Doyle Winston Rose died last Week in Tulsa. He was 71 years old.
Checotah may be closer to museum
Some recent grant money may have moved the City of Checotah one step closer to establishing a space to celebrate the town’s rich history.
According to Bette Sanders at Checotah City Hall, the push to create the “Heartland Heritage Center,” a museum dedicated to all things Checotah (steer wrestling, railroads, Jefferson Highway, Carrie Underwood, etc) is gaining a little momentum, thanks to some state grant money and community support.

Disc golfers get hooked
Disc golf fever is catching on in Checotah and its having an impact on the town, according to Curtis Hartshorn.
“It’s a great sport,” he said. “It has recently exploded. High school teams are forming. It is being introduced to PE classes.”
