Muskogee Public Library and Tahlequah Public Library are excited to announce that we have received a $20,000.00 grant from the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation Fund. This grant will help bring adult literacy classes to five libraries that serve rural communities.
Residents in the areas of Checotah, Eufaula, Hulbert, Stillwell, and Westville now have dedicated spaces and equipment at their local libraries where adults, 18 and older, can attend classes in GED test preparation, English as a Second Language (ESL), or U.S. Citizenship virtually through the Muskogee and Tahlequah Adult Literacy Programs.
Over the next few months, we plan to add classes in adult basic education and computer/ media literacy, offering more areas of opportunity. If you live in one of these communities, you know it can often be difficult to make the trip to Muskogee or Tahlequah to take classes. If you are willing to dedicate just two hours a week to attending virtual classes from your library, spend a little time with home practice, and make a commitment to yourself that you will reach your goal, then step by step, you will succeed. That is exciting!
Thanks to the grant, we are able to offer an incentive to help with travel costs for adults who are dedicated and attend their weekly class regularly as required.
To get started, visit your local library in Checotah, Eufaula, Hulbert, Stillwell, or Westville. You can also call Penny Chastain at Muskogee Public Library Adult Literacy Department at 918-6826657 Ext 101 for more details.
Receiving this grant means you, and others, will have the chance to build skills, reach goals, and open new doors for yourself, your family, and your community. Dedicating only two hours a week can help put you well on your way to reaching your goals.
Take advantage of this opportunity at your local library. It’s just down the road.
Hope to see you in class!
