Members of the Checotah Public Schools Board had the opportunity to attend the recent OSSBA/COSSA Leadership Conference held in Oklahoma City, where they engaged in discussions focused on school governance, educational leadership, and strategies to enhance student outcomes across the state.
Among the highlights of the conference was Monte Madewell’s recognition, who received the prestigious Buddy Spencer Leadership Award. This accolade is bestowed upon individuals who exemplify outstanding leadership at local or state levels and demonstrate a commitment to improving boardmanship.
Monte Madewell’s dedication to public education is evident in his dual role as a board member for the Indian Capital Technology Center (ICTC) and as Superintendent of Checotah Public Schools. His unwavering commitment to enhancing educational opportunities has made a significant impact on the community.
“Mr. Madewell has tirelessly served his students and his schools as an administrator and educator,” ICTC Superintendent Tony Pivec said. “Whether he is teaching, coaching, guiding or ad- ministrating, he is passionate about cultivating a student-first environment. He is one of the best board members I have had the privilege of serving with during my 25-plus years as a superintendent.”
Under Madewell’s leadership, the ICTC has seen remarkable growth, including the recent opening of its fifth campus in Coweta in October 2023. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in the construction of a new Adult Health Careers building in Muskogee. Madewell’s proactive approach is further showcased by the introduction of nine new programs in 2025 and an anticipated four more in 2026, reflecting his forward-thinking vision for vocational education.
As the Checotah Public Schools Board members returned from the conference, they brought back valuable insights and strategies that will aid in their continued efforts to advance educational excellence in the community, inspired by the example set by leaders like Monte Madewell. His achievements not only uplift the ICTC but also resonate with the broader goals of public education in Checotah and beyond.
