Stigler wins battle of the cats over Checotah 35-14
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

The Stigler Panthers (2-4, 1-2 District) won a decisive district victory over the Checotah Wildcats 35-14.

The Checotah Wildcats (4-2, 2-1 District) came out firing Friday night, striking first and setting the tone early in what looked like a classic county showdown. Quarterback Cole Rolland wasted no time connecting with Logan Crawford on a precise sevenyard strike in the first quarter to give Checotah the early 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats’ defense stood tall throughout much of the first half, flying to the ball and forcing Stigler to earn every yard. The Panthers finally managed to punch in a score late in the second quarter to even things up, sending both teams into the locker room tied at 7–7 and with momentum up for grabs.

Coming out of halftime, it was a game of inches and intensity. However, a string of costly turnovers in the third quarter turned the tide in Stigler’s favor. The Panthers capitalized on Checotah’s three giveaways, turning each into points and creating the separation they needed.

Even with their backs against the wall, the Wildcats kept fighting. Late in the third quarter, Rolland unleashed a perfect deep ball downfield to Jayden Lake, who sprinted past defenders for an electrifying 65-yard touchdown that reignited the Checotah crowd.

Rolland led the team both through the air and on the ground, rushing for 93 yards on 21 carries and throwing for 190 yards and two touchdowns while completing 13 of 29 passes. Tommy Calico added 55 yards on the ground, helping Checotah total 151 rushing yards for the night.

In the air, the Wildcats’ offense spread the ball around. Jayden Lake was the top target, hauling in four catches for 81 yards and a touchdown, while Elijah Muhammad made his mark with two big receptions for 65 yards. In total, Checotah’s passing game accounted for 248 yards, showcasing the team’s offensive potential despite the three turnovers. Turnovers were a key factor in the loss, not including that senior running back Jayden Ellen did not play in the game due to an injury.

Defensively, Woodrow Spears was everywhere, racking up 12 tackles to lead the Wildcats, while Rolland added 10 stops of his own in a gritty two-way performance.

Checotah will look to bounce back quickly with a short week ahead, hosting Holland Hall Thursday night at home. Expect another hard-hitting matchup under the lights as the Wildcats aim to return to the win column.
