Girl Scouts from the local area recently volunteered their time at Checotah Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Checotah and are learning the skills they need to become better citizens.
“I’m proud of our girls who are learning to become such great helpers,” Girl Scout leader Angela Reasor said. “Girl Scouts is a great place for young girls to learn how to first serve others and later lead others. These girls also grow through friendship, fun and fearless exploration that help build their confidence in themselves, their connection to each other and their community, and most of all, their character.
“Being a Girl Scout is more than just selling cookies. Some of the things our troop does are community service projects, camping, hiking, learn life skills, riding horses, canoeing, STEM projects, survival skills and how to be an entrepreneur by running their own cookie business and even how to budget their money.”
The six levels of Girl Scouts, from youngest to oldest, are Daisies (grades K–1), Brownies (grades 2–3), Juniors (grades 4–5), Cadets (grades 6–8), Seniors (grades 9–10), and Ambassadors (grades 11– 12). Girls can join at any point between kindergarten and 12th grade, and each level builds on the previous one to offer age-appropriate activities.
Girl Scouts meet at the First Baptist Church on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Daisies and Brownies meet from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Come to a meeting to ask more information on Juniors, Cadets, Seniors and Ambassadors.
Leaders are Angela Reasor and Jennifer Wright.
