The 110th meeting between the Eufaula Ironheads and the Checotah Wildcats was everything we thought it would be. The Ironheads’ courageous rally came up short in the 21-14 loss. Both teams played great defense with quarterback sacks and forced fumbles. What also makes this a wonderful game is the winner receives the McIntosh County Championship Cup trophy. With the win, Checotah leads the record 56-53-1.
The winners are always presented with the trophy and hear a history lesson about the game and how it was played.
For 14 years now the traveling trophy has made a round trip from Eufaula to Checotah and from Checotah to Eufaula and back. The football players and coaches enjoy the incentive of the trophy and it has been a pleasure to be a part of this game both as a player and journalist.
Good luck to those Eufaula seniors who will take the next step to playing at the college level and to Checotah who travel to Inola for the first round of the playoffs.
1-2-3 break.
