Oklahoma’s playmaking defense packed its biggest punch of the season Saturday, torching Alabama for 17 points off three massive turnovers and throwing the entire SEC and College Football Playoff race into full-blown chaos with a jaw-dropping 23–21 upset in Tuscaloosa.
Just two weeks removed from shocking Tennessee, the 11thranked Sooners (8-2, 4-2 SEC, No. 11 CFP) rolled into Bryant-Denny Stadium and delivered an even louder statement — knocking off the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide (8-2, 6-1, No. 4 CFP) and snapping Bama’s 17-game home win streak.
Eli Bowen electrified the stadium with an 87-yard pick-six that swung the momentum sharply in OU’s favor, while Kip Lewis terrorized Alabama’s backfield with two sacks. The Sooners handed second-year Tide coach Kalen DeBoer his first loss at home, silencing 100,000 stunned Alabama fans.
While the loss may not end Alabama’s playoff hopes, it puts the Tide on dangerously thin ice heading into a must-win Iron Bowl showdown with Auburn in two weeks.
Suddenly, OU’s 23–6 loss to Texas a month ago feels like ancient history. After entering last week’s CFP rankings as a bubble team, the Sooners now look like a legitimate playoff contender if they can finish strong at home against Missouri and LSU.
Alabama still had life late, but Ty Simpson’s fourth-down heave toward Ryan Williams fell incomplete, sealing the upset and igniting a wild crimson-andcream celebration in the Alabama stands.
Despite being a sixpoint underdog, Oklahoma did it with guts and grit. The Sooners mustered just 212 yards of offense but forced three turnovers — including an interception and two fumble recoveries — while holding Alabama to a mere 57 yards over its final four drives.
Quarterback John Mateer totaled 161 yards (138 passing) and punched in a rushing touchdown to lead OU’s offense. Simpson threw for 326 yards and a touchdown to Josh Cuevas, while Daniel Hill found the end zone twice for the Tide.
Entering the game, Alabama owned a +10 turnover margin — fourth-best in the nation — but it didn’t matter against Oklahoma’s suddenly scorching-hot defense. After managing just four takeaways in their first seven games, the Sooners now have six in the last two games, producing 37 points off turnovers in that span.
Alabama’s own mistakes loomed large: a missed 36-yard field goal and a 46-yard punt return allowed by special teams that set up OU’s first score.
Next up: Oklahoma hosts Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m. on ABC or ESPN.
