Oklahoma running backs coach DeMarco Murray is leaving the Sooners to take the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs, according to a report Wednesday.
Murray played at OU from 2007-10 and remains the Sooners’ leader in career touchdowns and all-purpose yards. He went on to become a three-time Pro Bowl selection in the NFL, finding most of his success with the Dallas Cowboys, for whom he led the league in rushing in 2014.
Murray got his coaching start at Arizona in 2019, then was hired by Lincoln Riley to join OU’s staff in 2020. He has remained at his alma mater up until now, turning down the advances of Ohio State in 2024 and Penn State prior to the 2025 season.
OU was to give Murray an extension and raise in backto- back years. He was set to make $875,000 in 2026 as one of the highest paid running backs coaches in the country.
Murray is the third assistant coach Oklahoma will have to replace this offseason. The Sooners parted ways with longtime tight ends coach Joe Jon Finley in January and hired Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten as a replacement.
Just last week, OU cornerbacks coach Jay Valai left Norman to take the same position with the Buffalo Bills. It was reported Wednesday that the Sooners are set to hire former Michigan assistant LaMar Morgan as Valai’s successor.
