Lady Wildcats leap past Ironheads
Dec. 2019 - The Checotah Lady Wildcats dominated arch rival Eufaula (8-16) in their first meeting of the season August 30 at the Chris Gawf Field. Both teams put a run on the scoreboard to tie the game 1-1. Alexis Hamilton scored the first points for Checotah and Journi James did the same for the Lady Ironheads.
However, the Wildcats’ high-powered hitters racked up seven runs in the second inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Sabetha Sands connected on a pitch for a double followed by Ciara Moore’s single in addition to two stolen bases in the second inning.
“We really wanted to win this game. Every time we were scheduled to play them something would change or it would rain. We’re a better team than what the scoreboard shows. Coach Green will have us correcting those mistakes that we made and have us focused for our next game,” Eufaula senior Journi James said.
Alexis Hamilton was the winning pitcher for Checotah. She lasted seven innings, allowed five hits and three runs while striking out five and walking one.
Liberty Glover took the loss for Eufaula. She surrendered eight runs on eight hits over one inning with zero walks. Senior Jaci Nixon relieved Glover.
“They jumped out early on us and we just could not overcome that deficit. We made too many errors against a good team. When you play a good team like Checotah you can’t afford to make mistakes and we did and they capitalized on them,” Eufaula head coach Ryan Green said.
Candice Morgan went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Eufaula Lady Ironheads in hits.
Sabetha Sands was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Checotah. Hamilton finished with 22 first pitch strikes in seven innings.
