Todd, Lee and Hayes heads Checotah Athletic Hall of Fame
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

The 2024 Checotah Athletic Hall of Fame inductees of Cleda F. Todd, Charlotte Dan Lee and Jay Hayes was recognized and inducted into the CAHF Friday night at the Checotah Myrtle Wallace Frost Event Center.

Cleda F. Todd was a standout basketball player from the class of 1959. Charlotte Dan Lee was also a star on the basketball court for the Lady Wildcats and graduated in the class of 1974.

Jay Hayes was a three-sport athlete for the Wildcats as he participated in football, basketball and baseball. Hayes graduated in 1989.

“I was fortunate to play on several really good teams over the years. In fact, playing three sports starting in Jr high, I only played on one team with a losing record. I was surrounded by an excellent group of coaches and great players and teammates. The hall of fame designation is a great honor, but the lessons learned, memories made, and enduring friendships are what I value above all else.

One of the most enduring lessons sports taught me is that, to be a good leader, you must first be able to be a good follower. I still embrace that philosophy to this day professionally and personally.

To be thought of in the same light as some truly great players is very humbling and I’m very grateful for my selection,” Hayes said.

Hayes was a three-year starter at quarterback in high school for Checotah teams that went 9-2, 9-3, and 8-4. He passed for 2,440 yards as a senior (1st in Class 3A and 4th Statewide regardless of class) and over 3,500 in his career.

He also was a three-year starter in basketball at point guard and played three different positions in baseball. Hayes was later elected as the Mayor of Checotah at 24 yrs old, elected to three terms (1995-2007).
