CMS helps local food bank

The Checotah Middle School canned food drive ended this past week with over 1,700 cans and $1,100 raised for the First United Methodist Church Mission Food Bank that helps locals who are struggling with food insecurities.

The canned food drive is the main philanthropic event at the middle school in their first semester. This yearly event teaches students to not only see the problems that exist within their own communities but to offer solutions to those problems by offering their time and talents not once but long term.

The CMS Student Council led the charge by bringing donations, loading the cans, unloading the cans and sorting them at the food bank.

Student Council members are:

• 8th Grade: Alyssa Johnson, president; Ava Reeves, Vice-President; Zane Walker, treasurer; Mason Collins, Nevaeh Waisner, Kalleigh York, and Becca Ambrose, representatives.

• 7th Grade: Taggart Duvall, Hunter Madding, Layla Epley, Brody Lovett, Tristen Palmer, and Owen Oleson, representatives.

• 6th Grade: Keegan Hollingshed, Riggin Teague, Ethan Edmonds, Jax Reeves, and Presley Brown, representatives.
