PONY CONVICTED

Pony Starr, charged with stealing cattle, whose case was on trial in the district court at Eufaula a portion of last week, was found guilty as charged by a jury but made no recommendation as to sentence. That matter is being left with Judge Cole.

On Monday Judge Cole passed sentence on Starr, allotting him six years in the penitentiary.

Later he was released on bail and will appeal his case to the supreme court.

Grady Herrod Ground to Death Under Train’s Wheels

Was But 9 Years Old

About 2 o’clock Monday afternoon the north bound local backed into the house track and without warning knocked little Grady Herod, a country boy, under the train and in the twinkling of an eye the cruel wheels of a freight car had passed over his head causing instant death.

The lad was an orphan and since childhood had made his home with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Winkle, well-known citizens residing near Texanna.

OUT ON BAIL

Last Thursday a tragedy was enacted in the rear of the Russell & Walthall livery when Joe Watson shot and instantly killed John Kilpatrick, an old citizen of Checotah.

The cause leading up to the tragedy appears to be that Watson owed Kilpatrick a board bill, but this Watson emphatically denied.

The men had previously used harsh language to each other.

Checotah Man’s Daughter Kills Self Wednesday Nellie Sizemore, 25, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Sizemore, residents of the Onapa community, committed suicide in a fashionable apartment in Seattle, Wash., Wednesday afternoon.

Unassuming Soldier Wins Medal of Honor If ever there was a truly homespun hero, Pfc. Leo J. Powers, soldier from Fort Lawton, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor, qualifies for the title.

He is 35, under height and weight, with false teeth.

But the citations which he received, and the stories told by his few surviving buddies, prove that he rose to almost superhuman heights on Feb. 1, when, single-handed, he made it possible for the battalion to take Hill 175, near Cassino.

City Scouts Honored for Paper Collection Checotah Boy Scouts were commended for the unusually fine job of collecting wastepaper in the August and September campaigns, in a certificate of award from the War Production Board.

Boy Scouts of the nation collected in excess of 117,000 tons of wastepaper during the two-month campaign.

Scouts of the Muskogee area collected 179 tons.
