The theme of the meeting was Halloween. Some ladies dressed with great enthusiasm and others simply wore a t-shirt.
Our hostesses, Vonnie Clark, Mary Nelson and Cindy Troup, dressed to the nines and put that much enthusiasm into the decorations! Incredible!
We played Halloween bingo for the hostess gifts which were lovely plants.
Our guest speaker was Dr. Jim Shoyer whose topic was “Looking Towards Birds in Winter.”
He was humorous as well as fascinating. Dr. Shoyer majored in zoology, minored in biology and was a professor at KSU for several years. His last subject was Agronomy, which encompasses the studies of field crops, soil and the environment.
Dr. Shoyer is also passionate about birds. In recent years we have lost 3 billion birds due to climate change, loss of habitat and predators. The number one predator is the cat. The cat is responsible for 70% of that loss. Other causes are buildings and windows, vehicles, windmill, oil spills, etc.
If you want a birdfriendly back yard, include food, water and shelter. Birds love trees and bushes, the more colorful the better! They love moving water and they appreciate a rock in the bird bath to perch on. He showed us pictures of Eufaula’s regulars then answered questions. Judging by the number of questions, his presentation was a hit.
November’s meeting will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the VFW.
Kay Foley Owens will give us a peek into the history of Eufaula as told by her grandfather, C.E. Foley, the first mayor. Hope to see you there!
