Grateful this season

Grateful this season

It seems like time is flying by and months are changing within days not weeks as year after year pass too quickly. However, I know every season has something that we can be grateful for if we just look for the good.

In the winter we could be grateful for a roof over our head with a warm cozy fire and blanket as we struggle with fur babies.

In the spring, we can be thankful for the flowers as they begin to bud and the grass as it begins to peek out from underneath the barren ground as our little birds begin to sing. They are also grateful to have made it through the winter.

As summer heats up, we could be thankful for a big old lake to swim in and air conditioning to go inside and enjoy when it’s just too hot outside.

However, when fall comes around, I find myself most grateful for this season I believe. I love the crisp, cool air and the beautiful array of colors we get to behold in nature as God paints the countryside for us to enjoy. I often stand in awe of just how beautiful the colors of the trees are during this season. As the sun reflects off vibrant, yellow, and orange leaves they appear to be almost golden. Then the deep burgundies and reds add a sharp contrast against the green before the leaves begin to fall and the cycle of seasons start all over again.

Fall however, will always be my favorite season of all. Maybe it’s because in life we’re always changing and as the leaves of the trees seem to change very quickly it reminds you how quick life passes by. Because I wish I could hold onto fall for another month or so, I don’t want to hurry into Christmas.

I want to stop and be grateful for the season I’m still in. I’m thankful for Thanksgiving – a time when it’s only about getting families together and having good food and fellowship. It’s also a time to be thankful and grateful for what we have, not what we are wanting.

I don’t think we stopped often enough to really look around and see all of the beauty of the fall season and take it all. When my daddy was alive, we used to love to count hawks that were up in the trees as we drove to my aunt’s ranch for Thanksgiving. I swear that man could pick out a hawk a mile away. It was always a way that he got all of us kids to notice God’s beautiful creation around us.

Even the sparrow looks down and sees everything that God has given to them and they don’t have to worry about tomorrow. So we should be so grateful to not worry and do as the scripture says “Take no thought of tomorrow because tomorrow will take thought of itself.”

That’s why we really need to be grateful to be in the moment we are given. We should be grateful to have those family members still around our tables or grateful that we can still call them and hear their voice when they answer. Believe me, it’s those little things you will want back when they are gone.

So this Thanksgiving I’m very grateful to God who didn’t have to give me a chance, but He did it anyways – again and again. I’m grateful for my family, even the ones I fight with on occasion, because love covers a multitude of sins. I’m grateful for friendships that warm the soul and make my heart smile. I’m grateful that there’s still breath in my lungs so I can praise God for one more day and I can thank Him for being such a faithful Father. This is why I’m so grateful this season and wish everyone a blessed Thanksgiving.
