The holiday season brings joy and generosity, but it is also a prime time for scammers to cash in. AARP Oklahoma is alerting the public to the “12 Scams of the Holidays” and sharing prevention tips from the AARP Fraud Watch Network to help protect Oklahomans and their loved ones.
“Scammers count on holiday distractions to exploit consumers,” said Jeff Miller, AARP Oklahoma Fraud Watch Network volunteer. “Knowledge is your best defense, and the ‘12 Scams of the Holidays’ offers a snapshot of the criminals’ playbook.”
From fake delivery notices to AI-powered celebrity impostors, scammers are using sophisticated tactics to steal money and personal information. AARP’s free resources can help you stay safe and scam-free this season. The ’12 Scams of the Holidays’ includes the following scams;
• Package Delivery Scams – Fake texts or emails about deliveries.
• Utility Scams – Threats to cut off service unless you pay immediately.
• Fake Charity Scams – Fraudulent solicitations for donations.
• Amazon Impostor Scams – Fake membership renewal notices.
• Gift Card Scams – Tampered cards and demands for gift card payments.
• Pet Scams – Nonexistent pets sold online.
• Romance Scams – Cryptocurrency investment schemes.
• Porch Pirates – Stolen packages from doorsteps.
• Bank Impostor Scams – Fake fraud investigators are urging money transfers.
• Grandparent Scams – Emergency calls requesting immediate cash.
• Weight Loss Scams – Bogus diet products and hidden charges.
• AI Celebrity Impostor Scams – Deepfake videos requesting money or info.
