Christmas countdown

From October to December is nothing but a blur with a holiday thrown into each month. Now we are at the Christmas countdown and everyone seems to be busier and busier as Christmas Day approaches. Yes, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” so you better be good even though schedules are crazy and shopping feels daunting. Balancing work hours, family time and social obligations seems almost impossible as everyone heads toward the big Christmas countdown to spend time with their loved ones and friends. Yet how can anyone ever get caught up with their “to do” lists? I know I feel like “Run, Run Rudolph” most of the year trying to figure out how to be in two or three places at the same time.

The busiest time of the year for me seems to be from Halloween to New Year’s Day with so many holidays packed into a nine-week period. No wonder by the time Christmas comes around, so many of us have already started clocking out mentally, if not physically, and prefer a “Silent Night” rather than “Jingle Bell Rock.” I’m almost spent now and we still have several days to go. But just like “Frosty, the Snowman,” we “hurry on our way, running here, there, running everywhere, saying catch me if you can.” Though we technically have all year to prepare for this crazy time we still can’t seem to get it all done. In fact, we drop from sheer exhaustion every night and get up to repeat the same silly cycle the next day. Work, shop, drop and roll into bed! It’s enough to make some of us want to go back to bed and dream of a “White Christmas” instead.

But there’s no time for sleeping, it’s time for the baking, entertaining and planning for yet another Christmas, as we are “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” because we’ve had too much eggnog and not enough sleep. That sleep deprivation can make me become a little bit mean spirited too, like the Grinch but there’s no time for that either so, it’s off to have “A Holly, Jolly Christmas.”

Just remember “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Right? So hurry and go mail off your last Christmas cards, figure out your conflicting schedules and wrap all those gifts to put under your tree. Then slow down and sip on a cup of cocoa while watching the fireplace all aglow to “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

As for me, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” rescuing too many kitties and puppies to count and trying to figure out how to cook and clean and do everything else in between before Dec. 25. But if I survive this Christmas Countdown with my family and work only I only have this left to say, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and have a Happy New Year too!
