The human side of the Civil War—the stories that unfolded far from the front lines—will take center stage when Dr. James Finck speaks at the next meeting of the Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library.
Finck, a history professor at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, will present “Homefront Heroics During the Civil War” at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17.
While the war’s opening shots at Battle of Fort Sumter (April 12–14, 1861) are often remembered as the beginning of a national conflict, Finck’s program shifts the focus to what followed at home. As soldiers left for the front, families and communities were suddenly thrust into new roles, facing uncertainty, hardship, and the daily challenge of survival.
Through personal accounts and lesser-known stories, Finck will explore how civilians—especially women and children— became essential to sustaining both households and morale during one of the nation’s most devastating wars. A nationally recognized columnist, Finck writes the syndicated series “Historically Speaking” and has earned top honors from both the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists and the National Newspaper Association. His passion for history began in his Virginia childhood, surrounded by the legacy of both the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Known for bringing overlooked perspectives to light, Finck offers audiences a deeper understanding of familiar events by revealing the people and experiences often left out of traditional narratives.
The April program is the fourth in a series of 12 free presentations scheduled for 2026 by the Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library. Attendees will have access to brochures outlining upcoming programs, as well as membership information for those interested in supporting the organization’s work.
The Friends meet on the third Friday of each month, except during holidays. The next program will feature Kim Woodruff, executive director of Under One Roof, who will discuss services available to individuals facing homelessness, addiction, and crisis.
Annual Friends’ membership is $5 and includes email updates on future events, along with opportunities to volunteer and contribute to the community’s cultural life.
