Disc golfers come together to help one of their own
By CURTIS HARTSHORN PRESIDENT OF THE LEDGA

Disc golf is just a game, until it becomes a boost to the people of a community. This past Saturday twenty-three disc golfers came together to play the Sammy Sling Benefit Tournament. This was a fundraiser tournament for fellow disc golfer Sam Stewart. Because of recent health problems that have hindered him from working his business, Sammy’s Pest Control, Sam was in need of some financial assistance to get him through a difficult time.

Sam is well known for his love of the game of disc golf, having introduced family and friends to the game. He has played in the Checotah league for several years and for the past two years has served as Treasurer of the Lake Eufaula Disc Golf Alliance. It was not difficult to persuade the disc golf community to come support one of its own. The attendance was low, but the generosity was high, as players paid in far beyond the $20 tournament entry fee.

Normally most of the tournament entry fee is used for prizes and the club expenses including course maintenance and repair. Not this time. Every dime was donated to help Sam Stewart. Even the prizes were donated. Combined with the matching funds of the LEDGA, over $2000 was raised for this worthy cause. Sam and his sweet wife Josie are ever so grateful for this act of generosity and wish to thank everyone who contributed.
