FFA member speaks at Lions Club
By LADONNA RHODES STAFF WRITER

Checotah FFA member, Chloe Reeves, recently spoke to the Checotah Lions Club about the importance of agriculture and how it affects Checotah.

“I proudly represent the Checotah FFA chapter and would like you all to see the impact agriculture has on our town.” Reeves said.

“The rich and productive soil in Checotah, combined with the thriving population of diverse wildlife, proved to be a major draw for farmers seeking fertile land to cultivate. As a result, the area’s hay growth flourished, leading to a substantial increase in beef production. In fact, this beef production has become one of the cornerstones of Checotah’s economy and has earned the town widespread recognition for its abundant supply of highquality beef.

“This thriving industry not only supports local farmers but also contributes significantly to the region’s overall economic stability and success. A significant number of individuals are likely familiar with the various beef enterprises operating in Checotah, among which Watsons stands out as a prominent producer. Additionally, Glover Veterinary Clinic plays an active role in the production of beef cattle and Checotah Livestock Market is the only sale barn within a 40-mile radius of this location. Without these essential establishments, our community would face a shortage of food and other critical resources. “The beef industry has far-reaching benefits that we may not even realize. ZTI Cattle Company, Emerson Cattle Co., Jefferies Cattle, Davidson Ranch, Miller Livestock, Howell Angus, McCutchen Cattle Call Ranch and McPeak Cattle are just a few of the prominent cattle production businesses in the Checotah area that significantly benefit us, more than we may realize. m “Despite the common misconception that agriculture only involves animals, there are numerous aspects in Checotah that deal with other fields of agriculture. For instance, Hoss Durrett’s business of selling ATVs, lawn mowers and tractors is considered a vital part of agriculture to provide agriculturalists necessary equipment. Moreover, the presence of farm insurance services provided by Tim Campbell at McIntosh Farm Bureau and Ramsey Insurance Agency of AFR also contributes greatly to our community’s overall prosperity. While People’s National Bank, First Family Federal Credit Union, and Armstrong Bank also benefit from and to the cattle production industry more than many people may realize.

“Within the career cluster of agriculture, there are seven pathways which fall under this division that include: agribusiness and management, agricultural communications, agricultural power, structures and technology, animal science, food productions and processing, natural resources and environmental science, and plant and soil science.”

“Some additional Checotah specific businesses that could fall into these categories include Frame Building and Supplies, Jefferies Land Co., Green’s Elevator, Checotah Feed Co., Wild Rozie’s Flower Shop, Henderson Truss, Pierce Farm and Ranch Supply, Trailquip, Sharpes, and Be-A-Champ Show Camps and more. All of these businesses play a significant role in contributing to our community’s economic growth.

“It is crucial to understand and acknowledge the diverse range of agricultural businesses present in our town. These enterprises not only provide essential products and services but also contribute immensely to the economy of Checotah. We should appreciate their contribution and support them whenever possible as they continue to positively impact our community and its agriculture.”

Reeves is a sophomore at Checotah High School and is in her third year of Future Farmers of America.
