Needham title highlights day one at GAC Championship

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southeastern had just two events on day one of the Great American Conference Championship meet but made the most of them, first with Eufaula graduate Macayala Needham earning a conference championship in the hammer throw while Alexis Longoria earned All-GAC honors in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Needham saved her best throw for last as she hurled the hammer 52.19 meters, breaking her own school record in the event as well as the GAC Championship meet record.

Samantha Wallis turned in an 11th place finish in the hammer, tossing 42.13 meters, while Emma Berry was 16th with a throw of 37.87 meters.

Keitian Bell was 22nd with a throw of 33.49 meters, while Mariana Mendez was 23rd on a throw of 32.06 meters.

Longoria would turn in a school record performance of her own while picking up All-GAC recognition with her sixth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after clocking a time of 11:23.94 to finish sixth and pick up three team points.

Arden Kesterson just missed an all-conference performance as she clocked a 12:23.16 to finish ninth in the steeplechase.

Southeastern finished day one with 13 points as a team.
