Eufaula’s Brooke Helms making a difference as Sooners Director of Sports Nutrition

Brooke Helms, MA, RDN, CSSD, LD, joined Oklahoma Athletics in the summer of 2022 and serves as the Director of Sports Nutrition.

In this role, she provides nutritional services to OU student-athletes and promotes nutrition as an essential component for optimal performance. She also assesses and analyzes dietary practices, body composition and energy balances of student-athletes, maintains ongoing communications with coaches, athletic trainers, physicians, strength & conditioning coaches, mental health staff and administration to improve the performance outcomes of athletes through nutritional interventions. Additionally, she evaluates effectiveness and compliance of nutritional products and supplements served to student-athletes, and manages & mentors all sports dietitians, graduate assistants and student interns.

Prior to Oklahoma, she served as the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Nutrition at Texas Christian University from September 2016 to June 2022. In that role, she created and developed the first sports nutrition department in their athletic program history and served as the first Director of Sports Nutrition. She also developed the advocacy proposal for NCAA legislation change reclassifying omega- 3 fatty acid supplements as permissible for Division I athletic departments to purchase and provide to student athletes, and conducted & copublished “Improved Physiological Markers of Omega-3 Status and Compliance With Omega-3 Supplementation in Division I Track and Field and Cross-Country Athletes: A Randomized Controlled Crossover Trial.”

Prior to her role at TCU, she served as the Director of Football Performance and Associate Director of Performance Nutrition at the University of Louisville from June 2013 to February 2016. In that role, she helped create and structure the UofL performance nutrition department, served as a member of the Cardinal Athletics Dining Facility task force and assisted in the planning of a student- athlete exclusive dining facility. She also created a football nutrition budget and meal expansion proposal.

She earned an Associate of Science with honors from Seminole State College, where she played golf. Helms also earned a Bachelor of Science with emphasis in health studies, with Distinction, from the University of Oklahoma, and a Master of Arts in Dietetics form the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center with Outstanding Distinction. Helms was an all-state golfer in high school. Brooke is the daughter of longtime Eufaula coach Stacey Helms and her mother Christie.
