NCAA suspends OU coach DeMarco Murray one game

Oklahoma has admitted to NCAA violations occurring in its football and track and field program and has agreed to a resolution with the NCAA.

As a result of the violations in both programs, the parties agreed that football coach Brent Venables and former track and field coach Tim Langford violated head coach responsibility rules.

OU running backs coach DeMarco Murray will be punished with a one-game suspension this season for impermissibly contacting 17 prospects over 16 months, including 65 impermissible phone calls and 36 impermissible text messages. The assistant coach indicated that he was not aware that a COVID-19 waiver of recruiting contact rules had expired.

Langford, who was terminated last November after serving as coach since 2019, directed a female studentathlete to provide some of her scholarship funds to two student-athletes in the men’s track and field program. Langford agreed that his violations occurred in April 2023 when he asked a student-athlete to redistribute $2,020 of her scholarship funds to two men’s student-athletes ($1,010 each) to help them pay rent.

An OU athletics department spokesperson released this statement: “The University discovered the violations through its monitoring system and investigated, reported and addressed the matters promptly and appropriately. The violations in question were limited to the actions of a coach who is no longer employed by the University and a current assistant coach. OU worked with the NCAA to manage the review and reach a conclusion, and penalties imposed by the University are already in effect.”
