Blue Gentry a Roper

At the roping contest in Muskogee last Saturday afternoon Blue Gentry, of Council Hill, and well known in Checotah, won the first prize in the main event of the day. There was a score of contestants representing nearly every section of the plains country.

Can’t Stay Away

L.B. Courtney who recently purchased a restaurant and short order business in Eufaula, found a man last Saturday who wanted the place worse than he did and sold to him at a profit. As a result, LB now puts his feet under the table at Checotah.

ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY

An auto accident, which for a time appeared as though one or two of the injured might die, occurred on the Jefferson Highway two miles north of the city Monday afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Taylor and five children of Hartshorn were driving north and turned on the side of the road for a pedestrian when the car skidded into the ditch, turning completely over and pinning Mr. and Mrs. Taylor and little daughter Wanda beneath the car.

Several doctors from this city were rushed to the scene of the accident and it was thought for a time the little girl might die as she was suffering with a severe concussion of the brain.

Checotah Boy Takes in Chinese Rebellion Mrs. F.S. King this week received a letter from her son, Tooker, who is now located on the battleship Huron at Shanghai, China. Tooker stated that his ship was rushed to that port at the outbreak of the revolution to look after American interests in the city. He further stated that according to his viewpoint the war was a “joke.”

MARLAND SAYS WEALTH TO PAY FOR NEW DEAL Rich Republicans Must Help Pay Cost, He Says E.W. Marland, democratic nominee for governor, spoke to a record-breaking crowd in the county court room in Eufaula Monday night, following an introductory talk by Jack Nichols, McIntosh county’s nominee for congress.

The nominee devoted much of his talk to the general charge that the “money powers” are in control of the republican party, and lashed at Lew Wentz, W.G. Skelley, republican national committeeman and W. R.B Pine, GOP nominee or governor.

Will Rogers Pinch Hits At Demo Rally

Will Rogers, the Oklahoma humorist, made a great democratic speech in ten minutes at Claremore last Saturday, when he appeared as an added attraction at the district meeting of the league of young democrats.

Ask Veterans Meet With Relief Leader

Claims for veterans relief in McIntosh county will be scrutinized by Bruce Stubblefield, state service officer of the Soldier’s Relief Commission, at a meeting scheduled in Checotah on Thursday, Oct. 18.

All claims now pending before the U.S. Veterans Administrtion will be investigated.

MITCHELL TELLS OF GRIM FIGHT IN NEW GUINEA

EVEN BEASTS OF JUNGLE FLEE FROM FIGHTING AMERICANS “You’ll never know what it means just to be home again,” was the heartfelt statement of Pvt. Weldon Mitchell, who recently returned to his native land after more than two years of fighting in the jungles of New Guinea.

Sergeant Jailed Following Attack on Eufaula Women

Eufaula police are holding a 21-year-old air corps sergeant in connection with the brutal beating early Wednesday morning of Mrs. Carter Fears and her niece, Nadine Wells, 16-year-old girl, at the Fears home.

Mrs. Fears, who is in serious condition at the Baptist hospital in Muskogee, regained consciousness Thursday after suffering a brain concussion from a blow on the head.

The solder, who gave his name as Sgt. Leo J. Farnsworth of Leavenworth, Kan., was arrested shortly after the attack.

CRIME TAKES SPURT AFTER DRY VICTORY Drunkenness Increasing

Crime is definitely on the upswing in McIntosh county as attested to by Sheriff Clarence Douglas’ report that 43 arrests had been made by his office in the past 13 days, including 25 for drunkenness and disturbing the peace.

CITY BURGLARS CAPTURED AFTER PURSUIT Three Texas youths were arrested in Carthage, Mo., Wednesday on charges of robbing the Chevrolet Agency and Conoco Service Station of $32.50 and a quantity of mechanical equipment here Saturday night.

Price of Intoxicants Soars in Checotah

The price of government tax paid whisky is expected to skyrocket in McIntosh county following the federal crackdown on Oklahoma bootleggers which came as an aftermath of the recent election in which the drys won a resounding victory.

Man Killed When Crashes Into Accident Scene Thomas L. Barnett, 20, of Hartshorne. was fatally injured on Interstate 40 in Oklahoma City when his car went out of control at the scene of a wreck and hit a Highway Patrol cruiser and a fire truck.

Checotah Family to Star In CBS Series

Last week the McIntosh County Democrat received a call from CBS studios in Hollywood, Calif., to tell us that Vern and Sharon Hubell and their two children, Naomi and Phillip, have been chosen to star in an hour-long weekly TV series on CBS. It will be called “Cowboy Country” and will be a new series to be aired in the fall of 1975.

Campbell is new recreation director

After weeks of false starts and rescheduled meetings, the City of Checotah finally has a Director of Recreation.

After returning from executive session at Monday night’s emergency meeting,” the Checotah City Council named Don Campbell the Recreation Director by a margin of 6-1. Councilman James Swadley cast the lone “no” vote.

Shurden Eyes Labor Commission Position Before he decided to run for Oklahoma Labor Commissioner, longtime State Sen. Frank Shurden (D-8) said he was faced with only one other option: retirement.

“I thought I was going to get to retire,” said Shurden. “But I started getting calls from friends and supporters, Democratic Party members. All of them asked me to do it. I’ve been taking care of the working men and women of this state for 28 years, so this will just be a way to continue that for another four years.”

Man arrested after starving dogs rescued from home House burns 2 days later

Onapa firefighters, sheriff ’s deputies, and volunteers with two animal shelters rescued more than 30 dogs in various states of starvation and illnesses – some near death – from a rural McIntosh County residence on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

The following day sheriff ’s deputies arrested 62-year-old Jackie Welch in the overgrown front yard of a house that so badly reeked of dog urine, feces and carcasses that rescuers and investigators were forced to wear oxygen masks and Hazmat suits when they entered the residence

Volunteers nursing abused animals back to health The volunteers at the Happy Paws Animal Shelter, north of Checotah on Business 69, are still in shock.

“It was the most heart-wrenching thing I’ve ever seen,” said Kate Paris, director of the animal shelter.

Paris and seven volunteers went to a rural McIntosh County residence between Texanna and Onapa roads Tuesday night after Paris got a call to come rescue about 30 dogs that were in cages and in bad shape inside a house.
